If your pup has a tendency to pull on walks, you know how valuable a harness can be. Along with being a fun (and stylish) walking accessory, a harness keeps your dog safe while giving you more control over your best bud. I’ve tried out several harnesses for my dog over the years, and Joyride has by far been one of my favorites.

Our Experience

Joyride Summer Mesh Harness Review - dog wearing harness standing up outside

I remember when I switched my dog, Micah, to a harness for walks, and it was seriously the best decision I made. It gave him more room to breathe, and I didn’t feel like I was constantly pulling on his neck. Over the years, I’ve tried different harnesses to see which ones work best for Micah, and I love finding new ones to use for the different adventures we take.

When I learned about Joyride, I was excited to try them out. I love the look of their harnesses and there are so many fun colors, patterns, and designs to choose from.

After browsing their selection, I decided on the Summer Mesh Harness. It’s not quite summer yet, but I like harnesses that allow airflow to keep Micah cool. This harness is perfect because it has a mesh design that is lightweight and breathable.

When the harness arrived, it was packaged in a super cute bag with paw prints and pug faces on it. After opening the package, I put the no-pull harness on Micah to try it out. I had to loosen the straps quite a bit, but the large size fit Micah perfectly once the straps were adjusted (Micah is 54 lbs with a 28” chest). Next, I took Micah for a walk!

My first impression is that this is a high-quality harness. It’s sturdy and stylish and has all the bells and whistles you need to make it extremely functional. It also does exactly what Joyride says–keeps your dog cool with the mesh material and helps you and your pup have an enjoyable walk with the no-pull technology.

One thing I love is the EZ grip handle. This is amazing if you need to keep your pup close to you. There are several times on hikes when large groups of people (and dogs) come by, and I like having Micah as close to me as possible. I normally cinch up the leash so he’s by my side, but with the harness, I can grab the handle and have a solid hold on him.

Joyride also includes 13 nametags, which are fun to play around with, especially if you like personalizing your dog’s walking accessories. It’s also great if your dog is a service animal or a puppy in training and you want to let people know right off the bat.

Most importantly, I found the harness to be incredibly secure. I feel comfortable and confident taking Micah for a walk, and I have peace of mind knowing he’s safe. While it’s definitely thick compared to other harnesses, if you like having a firm hold on your dog, this is the one to get.

If there’s one thing I struggled with, it was the Velcro strap. The strap is strong, which is great for keeping your pup secure, but it also means it’s hard to adjust. The good thing is once you adjust it for your dog the first time, you don’t need to mess with it again.

Key Features

Joyride Summer Mesh Harness Review - grip handle

How it Works

The first thing you’ll do is pick out a harness style that you love and a size that fits your dog. Once the harness arrives, try it out on your pup! Unbuckle the clasp and slip the harness over your dog’s head so the Velcro strap is on your dog’s chest and the buckle is under their front legs. Adjust the straps until the harness fits snugly without being too tight.

You can attach your leash to one of three rings on the back and there’s an EZ grip handle to give you better control over your dog and make taking it off a breeze. If you’re out at night, the stitching around your dog’s head and chest is reflective to help them stay visible, and the dog harness comes with 13 nametags that you can customize specifically for your furry friend.

Breathable and Lightweight

The claim to fame for this harness is the dual mesh (2.0) material. This breathable fabric keeps your dog cool on hot days so they can stay comfortable even in the most intense heat. It has three layers–a high-density inner lining that acts as a base, a stretchy interlayer that connects the base and the shell, and a breathable outer layer that maximizes airflow.

The outer layer is a shell fabric designed with mesh holes to allow air to flow through, and all three layers work together to keep your pup comfortable.

No-Pull Technology

Joyride designs their harnesses to help you and your dog have an enjoyable and relaxing wal, no matter how strong your dog is. To make this happen, they included three rings for you to attach a leash to–one in the middle and two on each side. This way, if your dog pulls, they’ll end up facing you instead of pulling you.

The harness is also designed to stop pulling without applying pressure to your dog’s throat like a collar would. This helps keep your four-legged friend safe while giving you greater control of your pup.

Is the Summer Mesh Harness a Good Value?

This harness is a great value. Along with being durable and high-quality, it does a great job of keeping your dog secure on walks and cool in warm weather. The EZ grip handle is perfect for when you need to get ahold of your pup and the reflective strap keeps your dog safe when the sun goes down. Overall, I’d say this harness is a solid choice and a great value for the money.

How We Tested

I initially put the harness on Micah to see if it fit. Micah is a 54 lb Standard Goldendoodle and measures 28” around his chest. According to his measurements, he’s borderline between a medium and a large. I ended up going with a large based on his weight and it’s a perfect fit! The straps are adjusted almost as large as they’ll go, giving him a little bit of wiggle room without being too tight.

Once the harness was on Micah, I took him outside for a test run. I walked him around my driveway for a little while before taking him on a walk around my neighborhood. Both walks went great and I’ve continued to use the harness on every walk since!

It’s a relief to find a review that actually tests how breathable the material is, especially since my dog struggles so much once the humidity kicks in. I’ve been looking for a lightweight dog harness trap heat against his chest during our afternoon walks. Having reliable canine gear that focuses on airflow really helps keep him from panting quite as hard when we're out. Did you notice if the mesh stayed pretty secure, or did it start to stretch out a bit after it got wet?
