Pup Scouts: What It Is & How to Join

Share

Three puppies with colored scarves

Many of us have fond memories of our days in youth organizations like the Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts. Undoubtedly, you learned many skills that you may even use today. Children learn respect and good values to help them become better citizens. But what in the world is Pup Scouts then? Pup Scouts is the canine equivalent of groups like Girl or Boy Scouts. The group consists of dogs and their caregivers, making it an excellent meet-up for people and pets alike.

How Does It Work?

Dogs learn how to get along with other animals, with opportunities to earn badges in recognition of the tasks they and their caregivers do together. The organization consists of troops, just like the people groups. They give back to their communities, all the while having fun doing it. They even have an online Troop 50 so that everyone can join in on the activities.

You and your pet can join an existing troop or create one in your town. Registration is easy by filling out the Pup Scout form to tell us about you and your dog. They have an initiation fee for new members, followed by annual membership dues after that.

What Do the Pup Scouts Do?

Each troop has its own characteristics. They conduct fundraising events in their communities and other activities like Pup Scout Cookies. Some troops meet online, whereas others meet in person. Not unlike the people groups, the real fun exists with the badges. Types include Hiking, Shelter Helper, Swimming, and more. Your dog can show off their accomplishments on their uniform.

Where Is It Located?

The Pups Scouts has a national presence with its online communities. Currently, 10 troops exist. They include the following:

  • Phoenix, AZ
  • Spokane, WA
  • Minnesota
  • Atlanta, GA
  • Florida
  • Beverly Hills, CA
  • Lafayette, LA
  • Burbank, IL
  • New York, NY
  • Troop 50 Online

New troops are welcome. Each communicates with members through their Facebook group. The organization also has an online presence on X, formerly Twitter. ABC Nightline, National Geographic, and Good Morning America have featured the organization and its outstanding efforts.

Advantages of the Pup Scouts

The main benefit of the Pup Scouts is the opportunity to socialize with other dogs and people. They can provide worthwhile mental stimulation. Research has shown that pups with an active lifestyle that includes these activities can reduce the risk of fearfulness in adults.1 The badges give dogs jobs, which offers other ways to bring enrichment into their lives. It presents the same advantage for caregivers with similar interests.

Disadvantages of the Pup Scouts

The only disadvantage is the low number of troops. The online community is an excellent compromise for caregivers to meet with like-minded pet owners even if distance keeps them apart. It may not benefit the dogs, but at least it brings cohesion to the troops. After all, the pandemic taught us we can still communicate even if circumstances prevent in-person and in-dog meetings.

Conclusion

Generations of children have benefited from participating in these types of organizations, and Pup Scouts takes this idea and applies it to our canine companions. They offer similar benefits for dogs, with opportunities to socialize and hone their canine manners. The organization uses many of the same things the kids’ groups have, such as badges, an oath, and uniforms. Pup Scouts simply gives canines the same experience!
