Dog Owner's Manual › Chapter 1: Choosing a Dog › A Brief History of Dogs ›A Brief History of Dogs, Part I
Since before the dawn of civilization, dogs have been a valued and welcome component of human society. But because the animal’s association with man is so ancient, we know very little about the long-gone days when it was created. Experts theorize that the dog, or Canis familiaris, was developed from its wild cousin, the wolf (Canis lupus). Though the wolf is a far less user-friendly system (Fig. A), it carries much of the basic programming (loyalty, courage, and highly developed social skills) that humans covet in dogs. Over many generations, wolf behavior was altered by selective breeding to enhance those desirable characteristics and to suppress undesirable ones, such as extreme aggression. The result has become one of marketing’s greatest success stories. Today there are approximately 60 million dogs in the United States alone (Fig. B), compared to only about 100,000 wolves worldwide. ![]() Chapter 1: Choosing a Dog

This manual was written in a tongue-in-cheek parody of a computer or mechanical owner's manual; no where in the manual is there any language that should be construed as devaluing your dog. It is a parody, with a comic slant to very useful information. Please do not read the content to be an attack on the love we all have for our dogs, because it clearly was not meant that way. I found the entire manual to be hilarious, along with the "mechanical" illustrations.
