| Barked: Thu Apr 18, '13 3:48pm PST | | | | | I have Frenchies who have a much more pronounced curve to their femurs, and who also can be prone to LP. My first Frenchie was a grade 4, yet both my vet and I agreed that surgery most often resulted in MORE issues than it resolved, ESPECIALLY in those breeds with dwarfism or shortened/curved legs. This particular Frenchie lived a healthy life to age 15, VERY unusual in a Frenchie WITHOUT LP, and except for the patella slipping out occasionally, maybe once a month at most, she had no signs of arthritis and was still hiking with me up until she died.
This vet is an orthopaedic special-ist, and obviously has occasions when he has to do this surgery, but he will only do it when the knee cap is constantly out and the dog cannot keep it in the grove at all due to the poor results overall observed after the surgery.
As a groomer I have seen plenty of dogs who have gone thru the surgery for LP and I have NEVER seen a single one who could walk normally after the surgery. These surgeries were done by different vets and at different ages in the dogs, and some of these dogs had, IMO, extremely mild LP, so it certainly wasn't a poor surgical procedure nor a poor surgical risk. Due to the very nature of the surgery, deepening the grove in the femur by cutting it, arthritis WILL be an issue since laying on extra bone is the bodies natural way of coping with the injury to the grove, and that is what arthritis actually is.
Beanie right now has grade 4 LP in one knee, grade 2 in the other. He is six years old, and the ONLY issue he has is for about 8 or 10 steps after his kneecap slips out until he can stretch it enough to slip it back in. He is by NO MEANS in pain, except perhaps when it actually slips out, yet he doesn't even limp after it slides back into the grove. At the present time he has NO signs of arthritis in either knee.
I would certainly avoid surgery if at all possible, especially since this has only slipped out once so far. I would also do plenty of research and only allow a vet who was extremely experienced in LP repair do the surgery if I chose to have it done.

| Barked: Thu Mar 28, '13 4:12pm PST | | | | | Still doing okay today. He was pretty sleepy all day, but no more diarrhea and he ate his normal supper. Guess he got treated in time. Today the vet actually told me she was afraid he might die from that much chocolate. Glad she didn't tell me that yesterday afternoon!!!!!
Years ago I had an 80 lb lab get a 3/4 pound bag of M & M's... I make him puke immediately. (I caught him eating them!!!) Most of them were still whole but he was pretty sick... vomited all night and had diarrhea for about three days. But, he survived as well, although we finally had to give him something for the diarrhea.
BUT... M & M's are semi sweet chocolate which is really far worse than milk chocolate, however, there is a HUGE difference between 7 lbs and 80 lbs!! I know I most certainly would have been sick if I had eaten that chocolate bunny all at once and I weigh far more than even 80 lbs. Of course, I won't find out now cuz it is GONE!!!!

| Barked: Wed Mar 27, '13 5:13pm PST | | | | | Fortunately, I must have gotten home right after he ate most of it... they said he vomited a TON of chocolate, had a bunch of diarrhea, still does... chocolate and charcoal, nice mix, but now he seems okay.
They did let him come home for the night and I must say, he wasn't looking for his supper, BOL!
Assuming he is still fine and hydrated in the morning we will consider him VERY LUCKY!!!!
Still not sure how he got ON my desk, but he will be in his crate from now on when I leave!!!

| Barked: Wed Mar 27, '13 5:07pm PST | | | | | Fortunately, Beanie is back home for the night. He was supposed to go back tomorrow for more IV's but he blew his catheter so they said to just keep an eye on him and see how he does.
Sadly, he does have black charcoal diarrhea but if that is all he gets I will be very happy.
They were trying to listen to his heart and get his pulse when I walked in... he heard my voice and that was the end of that!!! He is my scardy cat Momma's boy and it must have been an awful afternoon up there for him, poor boy.

| Barked: Wed Mar 27, '13 12:00pm PST | | | | | Just came home from work to find Beanie, 7 lbs toy poodle, acting a bit strange. I checked his eyes and gums and they were dry and tacky and a weird dark color. His abdomen was pretty bloated as well.
I looked around and found a wrapper for a 12 oz solid chocolate bunny with less than a one inch piece of the chocolate left.
Beanie is currently at the vets on IV's and getting activated charcoal plus some other drugs to help his kidneys and liver. They expect two to three days before he is out of the woods and okay.
This was MILK CHOCOLATE, which most of us have been lead to believe is not usually a problem, BUT he weighs 7 lbs, it was good, PURE American made chocolate instead of imported made with tons of sugar as a filler, and he ate about 10 or 11 ounces of it.
This bunny had been sitting, wrapped, on my desk for at least a week now and NO ONE had looked at it or touched it. Suddenly, he climbed up and got it today. Fortunately, I got out of work early today!!
Just wanted to remind everyone on Easter Week that even milk chocolate, in enough quantity, can be extremely serious!

| Barked: Wed Jan 23, '13 7:53am PST | | | | | My very, very first obedience dog, way back in 1972, was a rescue Labrador and was shown in AKC obedience with an ILP number. She started training at 7 years and worked thru her CDX, but age prevented her from getting the UD.
Beanie was my last obedience dog, and is also a rescue and has an ILP listing. He titled at poodle specialities and still goes back FEO when I go to them.

| Barked: Wed Jan 2, '13 5:11am PST | | | | | OMD, I have THREE toy poodles who do that stuff ALL the time!!! One, Annie, can even somehow open the baby gate and get into my bedroom and hide in the bed!!! Beanie follows me everwhere and ends up shut in guest bedrooms, bathroom, etc., and I spend HOURS searching for him to no avail. Ali gets under the pillows so she doesn't even go out, then I am searching everywhere and she is comfortably snoozing away.
Of course, I usually let ten out at the same time so it is easy for the little ones to sneak in without me seeing them.

| Barked: Sun Dec 23, '12 2:48pm PST | | | | | Most of mine are pretty good, except Beanie AND all the Frenchies have that "must kill" attack mode. They are sooo bad that I have to either put them outside or crate them. The Frenchies are that way with anything that makes lots of noise or has a ring or bell sound (especially alarms!) Beanie only has issues with the vacuum cleaner. | | | | |

| Barked: Thu Dec 6, '12 1:43pm PST | | | | | "If your state and juristiction allows, you can actually vaccinate against rabies at home. Just make sure to purchased good quality vaccines. You will want to shake the vaccine bottle before administering it. You will only need a one millimeter syringe. The vaccine should be injected subcutaneously (under the skin). Just make sure to keep your dog at home and to keep an eye on him, just in case there is a reaction to the vaccine."
The reason most areas DO NOT accept owner vaccinations against Rabies is that there are MANY reactions to this vaccine and I don't know too many owners who have epinepherine and lasix and access to oxygen should anaphalatic shock happen. Without it, your dog can easily be dead before you can transport him to the vet for treatment. Not something I am willing to fool around with and I live right next door to my veterinarians clinic.
