Choosing the Right Dog > some people should never own dogs(rant)

I may look- little, but I'm- ALL dog! |
| Barked: Thu Apr 25, '13 5:35pm PST | | | | | The collar is to be worn snugly high up on the neck, right behind the head and at the base of the ears. If the dog can get his jaw under the collar it wasn't being worn right.
While this point is correct, it is still highly possible for a dog's collar to get caught on the bars of the crate if it is a wire crate. You don't want to ask my mother how she had to learn that.

Food & Nutrition > RECALL on Evo, Healthwise, Innova, Californa Natural!!!

| Barked: Tue Mar 19, '13 12:56pm PST | | | | | I know and understand that it could happen to any pet food brand. And it's good that they are voluntarily recalling as a precaution. It still doesn't change the fact that it's scary. Especially knowing we just finished bags of the dog food AND the cat food. Nor does it change the fact that I'd rather just cook for my dogs if it were an option again. | | | | |

Dogs and a Clean Home > Swiffer Wet - not safe for dogs?
Sandy Baby- ♥
I may look- little, but I'm- ALL dog! |
| Barked: Mon Mar 18, '13 9:41pm PST | | | | | I just use vinager and water, (its a natural disinfectant) for the floors and counters.
This actually works REALLY well for cleaning things and is a commonly recommended method for cleaning rodent cages/tanks. If it can get that really strong smelling hamster urine out, I imagine it can clean a floor.
Thanks for the clarification about this being false, though, to the two peopl ewho posted the link. My sister has a Swifter and though we don't like using it, I use it occasionally to get up foot prints or paw prints or small spots. It's not that great for whole room use, though, because of the residue it leaves behind. In any case, I'd hate to think I'm putting Chloe, Ninja, and Chico in danger when I use it.

| Barked: Mon Mar 18, '13 9:28pm PST | | | | | Scary. We just finished a bag of Innova. I'm not sure if my mom saved the label so we could have the number. I usually do that with every bag of pet food we finish, but she forgets to sometimes and I think she was the last one to feed the dogs from it.
I'm so close to switching back to homemade and putting all the dogs on it.
Yeah. After it was bought out by P&G, I really should have seen it coming.

Choosing the Right Dog > Ridiculous things people assume about dogs.
Sandy Baby- ♥
I may look- little, but I'm- ALL dog! |
| Barked: Mon Mar 18, '13 3:23pm PST | | | | | It's all in how they're raised" is a huuuge pet peeve of mine.
It's become a huge pet peeve of mine, too. I feel it actually does more harm than good. Because it causes people to buy poorly bred dogs from bad breeders thinking that they're rescuing the dog - though often it's better to let a rescue do that - and then acting surprised when they do everything by the book and find out that hey, maybe genetics do play a role. Upbringing has a lot to do with how a dog will turn out. I do not and will not deny that. A socialized dog is going to handle people better than one that stays in his house all the time, the same way a dog who knows "come" is more likely to come back to ya. But genetics are still a large part of what makes up a dog. If they weren't, we wouldn't have been able to selectively breed for personality traits!
I can't think of any assumptions atm. I'm sure I have a ton. But I'm a bit distracted right now and most of the ones I have have probably been covered anyway. The only one that does come to mind is the whole old saying "You can't teach an old dog new tricks". Which is plain not true. Old dogs can learn,t oo. Chance proved that. But people always assume old dogs can't and so just give up on them once they reach old age and let them do whatever they please. I could understand that if they reached the point of incontinence or senility. But nine times out of ten, when I see people with this mentality, that is not the case and the dog is merely old in years rather than anything else.

Food & Nutrition > Switching dogs off of Bentiful, suggested brands? Question about Beggin Strips.
Sandy Baby- ♥
I may look- little, but I'm- ALL dog! |
| Barked: Fri Mar 1, '13 2:25pm PST | | | | | Good luck on the switch!
I have trouble affording certain foods. It wasn't so in the past, but hard times can happen to anyone. Generally speaking, I shop at PetSmart for Sandy and Sweeney's food (the rest of the dogs are my mother's, so she buys their food). I look for sales, which is easy since I have Pet Perks. Normally, I buy Blue Buffalo which is decently priced. Occasionally Wellness or Innova will be on sale. Sandy didn't do so well on Innova, but Sweeney is okay on it. Both of them love Wellness. There's, also, a new food at Wal Mart that is cheap and halfway decent called Pure Balance.
As far as treats go, I'm of the belief that treats - in moderation - are just treats. I don't give brands like Beggin Strips often. It's a very rare thing in our house. But occasionally I may. Normally I stick to Blue Buffalo treats, though. As the dogs love them.

New to Dogster/Tips & Tricks > Ex-Plus User - want to add a new pic

| Barked: Tue Feb 19, '13 7:23pm PST | | | | | Thanks for your post.
I tried your advice, and it didn't do the trick, either. I suppose I'll contact HQ later then.
I do plan on buying Plus in a month or two, so I'd like to keep the photos there. I'd rather not have to upload some odd hundred photos again.
Thanks again for the help.

| Barked: Tue Feb 19, '13 2:41pm PST | | | | | I used to have plus, so each of my profiles has at least 100 photos stored on them. Even though you can't see them now, I'd like to keep them there. A nice Dogster made Lilo some beautiful wings which I'd like to upload to her page. I have tried clicking do not display on some of the pictures currently displayed, but I still cannot upload the picture. Will I simply have to delete until I can upload? Or is there another way to do it without deleting a lot of pictures?
I wasn't sure where to post this, I figured tips & tricks fit it best. I'm still not entirely sure, though, so if there's a section that would have been better suited I apologize.

Food & Nutrition > Anyone else sick of the food reps?
Sandy Baby- ♥
I may look- little, but I'm- ALL dog! |
| Barked: Tue Feb 19, '13 1:45pm PST | | | | | The food rep for Blue Buffalo at my PetSmart is actually very nice and not pushy at all. She only corners you if you're lingering in the natural dog or cat food aisle where the Blue Buffalo is. So, she pretty much waits to see if you look confused as to what to buy. And when she recommends Blue Buffalo, she'll be honest and point out a few other brands that might work, too. Was even honest about how the Wilderness line could make a dog overweight if you fed too much. Funny how, every time I speak to her, even when she points out a new line of Wellness or something... I leave with at least one can of Blue Buffalo.
I don't like the pushy reps. I like nice reps. The kind who will stand in the pet store with you and talk about why they feed the food, why they recommend it, why it might be good for your dog, and why any higher end brand (even the ones they don't represent) will be better than grocery story brands. I haven't seen that BB rep in a long time. I kind of miss her. I sent a nice word about her to the Blue Buffalo FB page. Wasn't sure where else I could send one.
I don't like seeing reps online, though. It feels impersonal. I especially don't like when they say "don't feed (this food) at all. (our food) will be far superior and will work best for any dog". Which is simply not true. Not all dogs to good on one food. There is no "perfect" pet food.

Dogster Lifestyle, News & Entertainment > A little venting about Online Attitudes
Sandy Baby- ♥
I may look- little, but I'm- ALL dog! |
| Barked: Fri Feb 15, '13 5:29pm PST | | | | | Being a little brash seems common on the internet. I guess because many people find it easier to be such when no one can see who's typing. If I find myself getting an attitude, I just take a deep breath and remind myself that I'm speaking to another person. Golden rule comes in handy there. Treat others as you yourself would want to be treated. If I want help, I want to get respectful, polite answers, wouldn't I? People who are rehashing what they've read are just trying to help. So, I give them the benefit of a doubt. I was like that at one point. I grew out of it as I grew up, and now I only post if I've had experience or at least know someone who has, so can be of some help. But sometimes, those people, get defensive when you ask for further help. I find it's often best to just skip the negative posts and move on.
There are some hot button issues where if you mention something once, no one reads the rest of your post and just jumps to answering. As you mentioned, tethering/chaining is one of them. I have family and friends who chain and tether (as in the red cords), but I myself don't. My two love bugs (Sandy and Sweeney) are perfectly content being indoor dogs. But I don't have a fenced in yard, so, those red cords help give them outside time when they're not being walked. They're only outside on them when I'm there to watch, and never for extended periods of time. But if I posted about that on certain sites, I'm likely to get accused of leaving them on chains all day. Because someone, somewhere would see "tether" and "outside" and stop reading there. They're trying to be helpful, but this is also the internet. And tone is hard to read.
I'm sorry you've had such bad experiences. I've found Dogster mostly helpful, though, in the almost six years I've been here. So, I hope you decide to stick around. Congrats on your Akita. They're truly beautiful dogs. Which, I admit, I have no experience with.
