| Barked: Sun Mar 27, '11 5:38pm PST | | | | | I need help and advice on how to take care of my little Gizmo. A couple months ago I brought her to the vet because she was peeing a lot. He diagnosed her with Cushings and put her on Ketoconazole. When I went back to get her follow up blood tests, he told me her cortisone levels are still extremely high and the ketoconazole hasn't had any affect. He says he suspects she has a tumor - I think he said on her pituitary gland. He said even with an ultrasound it would be hard to see and even if the ultra sound tech did see a tumor, it would be hard to operate as it is right by major vessels going to the heart and lungs. (If any of this doesn't make sense - it is me misquoting him. I was pretty overwhelmed with information and I'm pretty confused). He wants to treat her with a drug that will kill part of her adrenal gland so it doesn't produce as much cortizone.
I would have to moniter how much she drinks very carefully. Does anyone have any experience with the tumor/cushings thing that can explain it to me better. I read online that if it is cancer, the cortisone may even slow down the growth. This weekend Gizmo started getting really shaky so I think whatever is going on is getting worse. I read that if I don't treat the cortisone eventually it will shut down her organs. Also, any advice on montitering her water consumption - I have 3 dogs and I work full time. Sorry this is so long and I will appreciate any advice! | | | | |
