BUMP?

Once again, on Catster, they're saying gizzards are a good source of taurine. If this is true, then I have no worries. Gizzards are pretty easy to get. Hearts are pretty hard to get. I was only able to feed one once, two or three years ago.

The kittens are currently on wet food, and I'm told they won't eat anything else. I was planning to do a gradually switch, anyway. Take a little of their food home, mix it with our food, put less and less of their food in with each meal, etc.

Do you think ground beef will be a good meat to start on? Just thinking it might be similar to what they're used to eating at the moment. And then introduce chicken thighs?
I'm also going to introduce kibble (I have Wellness Kitten), because she's going to need to be fed that when I have to leave her with a friend of our's while I'm on vacation later on this summer. Plus I'm still thinking I might go with partial raw for a bit, especially if I don't have organ sources totally sorted out before then. Because that is still somewhat of a problem. (I DID find what looks like some kidney from months ago in my freezer this evening, though.)

Should be getting the kitten in a little over a week from now. Excitement.happy dance I'm pretty sure we've decided which one to get now.

On Catster, they're telling me that gizzards are a good source of taurine, too? As well as muscles that are moved a lot, like thighs.
I know if I feed whole mice that will include all the organs, including heart. If I feed them on a regular basis, would that be good enough?
They also said that chicken hearts are fine to feed.

I was told that red meat has a lot of taurine, though? So if I feed mostly red meat, will the kitten be fine?

Oh yeah, the taurine is another issue. I can't really find any hearts, beef or chicken, anywhere. And I can't afford to buy it online all the time.

I wouldn't want to feed my kitten live mice because last winter we began to get large field mice. And I'm not sure I'd want him hunting those when they come back, and we're told they probably will. Of course, the cat might try to hunt them anyway. I just hope we wouldn't have to resort to poison then, because the cat would be poisoned if he tried to eat.

Any tips on getting the kitten to eat the whole prey? IDK, I get the idea cats are harder to please than dogs. I want to introduce this stuff as soon as possible because I read that a cat's lifelong tastes are developed during the age of two to three or four month. But I picture him batting it around like a toy mouse from the store or something. laugh out loud
I know when I had to raise some kittens from a stray cat a long time ago, if they didn't understand the stuff I gave them was food, I would open it's mouth and place a bit of the food in. But it was canned food. Would that still work with whole prey? Or meat cuts in general?

Anyways, I actually found out that one of my friends has pet reptiles. A couple of them, actually. I asked her about sources for whole prey food, but she said other than mice there's hamster. Another one said large frozen rats. Doesn't sound like much variety.

Well, even if I do go full raw right away, I have use for the kibble I bought. Because I'm going on a trip this summer, and can't bring the pets with me. So I'll be leaving them with friends until I get back. (The trip isn't until late July.)

So, a bit off-topic, but I went ahead and made a profile for the kitten. Even though I won't have it until somewhere around June 9 or 16th, and even though I'm still trying to decide between two of them...the profile has pictures of both of them, including their littermates.

So today we're thawing out some leftover chicken, and the stuff I bought a few days ago: ox tails, grass-fed beef, and turkey necks. I gave Treader some sardines yesterday. Seems those are the possibly only fish he'll eat.

When I go back to the pet store to buy more stuff we'll need, I'll ask them if there are any other options besides feeder mice, or if they know where I can get more options.
I'm just worried about giving too much or too little calcium, or anything that would hurt a kitten's growth.
