Crazy stuff going on -- 2 vets recently have made the news for animal cruelty/abusing animals. One vet left his dog in the car on a hot day, the other vet beat a beagle to death with a hammer/screwdriver.

Behavior & Training > serious separation anxiety

I completely sympathize with what you are going through, as I am going through exactly the same thing right now. Except that my little guy probably isn't causing as much damage! It is absolutely heartbreaking, and like you I have my little guy at my side as much as I can and I love giving him attention. After all, that's why I got a dog - to give it love.

But after 2 years of this, I've realized that I'm really doing him a huge diservice and causing him significant distress. Last week I finally, finally kicked him out of my bed and made him sleep in his little bed on the floor. It killed me and it was NOT easy on him. For the first 2 nights neither of us slept. But I'm slowly, finally seeing a little payoff - he's not following me room to room anymore! Usually he's tagging along at my heels EVERYWHERE I go. Now I can actually go from the living room to the kitchen and he'll stay in the living room. For him, that's a miracle.

I did try crating him again today when I went out, and he absolutely destroyed the crate. My vet told me not to crate him because he would destroy his teeth and that some dogs with severe anxiety do worse with a crate. Since Dash can't do that much damage, I'm okay with him not being crated. We can work on it.

I did have Dash on medication (Clomicalm) last year. It took an edge off and helped him concentrate a bit more with training, but it just wasn't enough. We tried valium along with it, and valium seemed to make him even more hyper. I then tried some alternative treatments (DAP spray, diffuser and collar - none of which helped), also flower essences which I'm trying again now.

I think the biggest help, honestly, has been ignoring him. Completely. I only give him attention on our walks. Otherwise, no petting, cuddling, etc. He's not allowed up on the furniture or the bed anymore. I give him a buster cube and a kong to occupy himself when I'm around. He's become much less demanding and anxious around me. Hopefully that'll transition when he's not around me.

It's killing me not to smother him with love but now that I've seen how it is causing the problem...

Behavior & Training > a different type of dog and cat problem

I looooovvveeeee my kitty, too. Almost a little too much. I wouldn't leave her alone - I really like to nibble on her belly, and believe it or not she tolerates it pretty well! But sometimes I don't know when to stop.

Thank God my cat is so patient and tolerant, but Dash has a tendancy to just get a little obsessive about following her and bothering her. I found that giving him the treats when he stayed away from her worked like magic overnight.
