Behavior & Training > Does the Bark Match the Dog?

The first time we heard her try and howl, we all stopped dead in our tracks and just kind of looked at her for a moment, then chuckled! Maybe she was a beagle in her past life BOL

Behavior & Training > my dog wont come when I call her
Lexus

| Barked: Thu Apr 25, '13 8:13am PST | | | | | There are a few things that you need to be aware of, and they are firstly.....make sure when you call her and she comes, it is always positive on your end. A dog will not want to come to you if she knows she is in trouble. And doing that will poison your call to her for the rest of her life. So always be sure when you call her it is positive. For instance, if she has done something naughty and she knows it, and she knows you are calling her over to give her trouble.....she will not come....just like a child. And of course a lot of this depends on how you are treating things when she does something not allowed. The more negative you are.....the more she will not trust you and not come when called. Positive reinforcement is the way to go, but of course they need to know what is right and what is wrong, and it is your job to teach that.
When you call her always associate it with something positive, like have a treat in your hand, let her know you have a treat and when she comes praise her and give treat......do this every time you are needing to call her and she will learn that going to you is a good thing. Even if treats are not available every time, when she comes make sure you tell her what a good girl she is and give her lots of loving.

Welcome to the world of Huskies. BOL!!!!
I can't even tell you the amount of you tube video's etc i have seen of Huskies who have been video taped while left alone..........tearing apart the couch it always seems. I have 2 Huskies, the youngest is about 7 months now or so....when we first got her she was fine being left in our bedroom while we weren't home for 2 whole month....no problems. All the sudden we came home to a tore apart bedroom....bed sheets and the works, then the next day....same thing, so I bought a crate! Best thing I ever did! Anyways, how long have you had him at your house so far? I am thinking probably not very long right? The pup is young as you said and will need an adjustment period.....first being away from his mom and siblings.....then going to your moms with 2 other dogs....now once again, a whole new place, with nobody but you, the pup is probably very confused and somewhat lonely right now and needs time. However a whining pup in a crate can be upsetting also, not just to you but neighbors etc. So have you "crate trained"? Meaning made the crate a safe happy place for him? Safe toys to chew like a kong or nylabone? something that he can't choke on while alone. Comfy bed? You say you exercise him lots which is great....Huskies have very high energy and do need lots of exercise. Make sure he goes to the bathroom before putting him in. Maybe try leaving the t.v or a radio on while he is in the crate so it's not so quiet? Make sure the toys you leave will keep him entertained. Like if you choose a kong, put peanut butter in it and that keeps them busy for a while and will hopefully just nap when they have licked out the center of the kong.
Crates have to be a happy place for dogs. Leave the door open in the crate while you are home so he can go in and out as he pleases, scatter treats in it to give incentive to want in there, when you put him in make sure and give a few treats. Do not let him out when he whines. When you come home ask him to sit (if he knows that command) before opening the door, do this every time that way he is not so crazy when you let him out, and when he does sit, open door give treat.
Well that was a lot of info so I will leave you with that and hope it helps a bit, I know it is frustrating!

A lot of people swear by raw, which is another good option, so good luck with your decisions, and congrats on deciding to get a puppy

Sounds exactly right. Lexus's fur does feel different then Mika's and hers is coming in clumps, Mika hasn't started yet but when she does it doesn't clump at all.....so majorly different, good to know that is normal though. Thanks for the info!

Siberian Husky > blow out
Lexus
shy girl |
| Barked: Sun Mar 17, '13 5:26pm PST | | | | | So now that the weather is warming my huskies are having their blow out.....Mika, my 3 yr old does not blow out very badly, but Lexus is.....I do know it is normal and they are suppose to do this and everything but my question is, she seems to be losing to much on her back legs. There is way to much fur missing.....she is not bare, but I feel she has lost to much....has anybody else had this problem? Should I be worried? I ask because as I said Mika, when she has her blow out......she still has lots of fur everywhere, so this is new to me....any advice is appreciated. | | | | |
