Dog Laws & Legislation > Stolen dog returned now someone is knocking at my door

He had on one of those collars that are like a choke collar but are made out of nylon and are limited as to how far they can 'choke' the dog. I can't remember what they are called right now... Anyway, we live on a busy road. We were home at the time. I had let our dog outside for a few minutes. Were we would chain him up was in perfect view of the road. We had just gotten him and he had no tags or microchip. When I got up to let him in, I found, to my horror, just a collar laying on the ground and no dog. We searched and searched. One of our neighbors said they saw a black dog but the didn't think to catch it. We never did get him back.
Now, we have a full blooded husky who is tied out all day. I have tried to tell my parents about the danger of leaving a full blooded dog outside all day long but they refuse to put him in a crate. You see, my aunt had a dog that was crated all of the time. That dog was so skittish it wasn't funny. But, Koda is out of sight of the road so I can only hope that is enough...
Also, I have heard of people stealing dogs and then waiting to see if the owners will post a reward and if they do they will return the dog and collect their reward... People are so cruel...

I just learned that I am a little late in stepping up and trying to fix the problem... My mom has already put an ad in the paper. I'll do what I can but there's not much I can do when no one else, family not the people here, is willing to help me.

I am going to ask them for a month; one month to work on correcting his marking. I will treat him like we did Sassy, our puppy, back when we first got her. He will have me following him everywhere he goes in the house. If I am going to go to the bathroom, he goes out. If I go out, he goes out. I am the only person in this house who cares enough to do this.
Thank you, the one person who replied.

No we do not have a crate for him. We put him outside while we are not home and our 10 month old lab goes into the mud room.
I will try to get a good cleaner. Do you know of any good ones?

I can see the results of he marking through stains on the floor and on the boxes that he has taken a liking to. I know we cannot keep abrogated that does this but I also know most other people will not deal with it either and he will end up in a shelter somewhere. I don't want that to happen to him. Wat can I do???

| Barked: Wed Dec 26, '12 2:52pm PST | | | | | Well, just got news that Koda attacked Sassy over a bone the other day. Is it normal when you've got two dogs in a house to fight every now and then? I wouldn't think so... He's never done that before... Sorry, I've never had two dogs in the house at the same time before... | | | | |

"Attacking is much different than chasing, when you allow this to happen you are getting closer and closer to the dog killing a cat. The only safe way to keep them is to separate them completely, cats in one area and dog in another. Medication and training can help, but some animals have a severe prey drive and it isn't safe to keep them together. Contact a veterinary behaviorist that can see the behavior if you are unsure and they can tell you if the dog is likely to kill the cat or if behavior modification and medications may help with your training program."
I guess I'll get a hold of a Behaviorist then.
