I've more or less given up on finding the right dog in the size bracket that I'd wanted.
Right now I am deciding between the Australian Shepherd (or mini Aussie) and the rough Collie.
Yes, I will be working with a trainer.
I am considering the following mini Aussie breeders in my area:

Can anyone give me feedback on them?

What would be best for my situation is to find a breeder who offers older puppies and/or ones who have already completed the basic commands. (I realize this is looking for a needle in a haystack.) I may have found one in this breeder: http://crownthistlecollies.com/
I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Can anyone recommend breeders for me? Breeds I'll consider: Mini Aussie, Aussie, Collie (smooth or rough), GSD, Golden Retriever.

Today I brought out the nail clippers and made the ultimate mistake: I caught the quick. I stopped the bleeding right away, and put the clippers away to avoid traumatizing her further.
How do I tell in a black dog where the quick is? (I'm used to my cat's white nails.)
I'm about ready to take her down to a pet store and ask the grooming department if they will do it while I watch.

Maybe I'm asking to much for her to step in my direction while outside? I'm going to keep working with her inside, because that's the most boring environment.
It also helps to have some sort of time frame for when I ought to see improvement. Part of me wishes I saw more change already, but then again, this is only the third day she's been here. I know that in the dog training world, slow is fast.

Even at night, when I'm shutting her into the bedroom with me, I give her something. A Kong or hollow femur bone with peanut butter, her stuffie to play with, a bully stick...
Thanks for the book suggestion!
A couple of weeks? Okay. I'll work on her stepping toward me in different places in the house, and then work on her looking at me in the driveway.

How do I teach her not to bark when I leave? Last night I shut her into the bedroom and went back upstairs for a second. About 30 seconds after I left, she started whining and barking. I told her "No" firmly and ignored her. But I've got roommates and I can't do that to them!
