The bone rubbing on bone improperly will wear down the bone. But the FHO has been great and her muscles need the strength more than ever before to keep her mobile & happy. We are still competing & loving agility though! | | | | |

| Barked: Mon Jan 7, '13 9:26am PST | | | | | Hi there. I have some seriously BAD hips. My mom found out when I was 8 months old. I had an FHO on one hip and it has helped me a ton. My Mom gives me Adequan shots and that REALLY helps! I live for agility. It is the only thing that keeps my muscles strong. Now that Im older I only jump 8". It keeps my spirits up and me strong. When I dont keep up with agility I get very sore and stiff actually. When I was in recovery from my surgery I did underwater treadmill and saw a rehab specialist. She worked me with the electro stim and the cold laser really helped me heal by bringing new blood into the area. Anything that is sore is really helped by that increased blood flow. Loved that thing. Anyway... keeping active and the weight off are some of the best things for bad hips. The FHO was good for me, they wanted to do a total hip on both but I didnt have enough bone left to do so. The vet cant believe I walk much less compete in agility. Anyway, an FHO might not be right for everyone though. It was hard for mom to see me in so much pain at the time, but now it was well worth it. Stay active. Don't slow down or it will hurt more. Trust me! | | | | |

Food & Nutrition > Asparagus?

| Barked: Sat Mar 10, '12 8:24am PST | | | | | Is asparagus toxic to dogs? We don't feed our dog(s) asparagus, but there is a chance they could get a hold of some. It seems whenever Mihkoa gets some she gets VERY sick. (2-3 days of diarrhea) . Has anyone else had this issue before? We don't eat it super regularly(1-2x a month), but this has happened 3x now (getting a few small cooked pieces from the baby who loves to share). We are extra cautious now, but I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem or has more info. Thanks! | | | | |

| Barked: Fri Feb 3, '12 4:25pm PST | | | | | Mihkoa has the worst hips my vet had ever seen in 20 years of practice. We took her to UF Vet (the best in the area) and the vet wondered how this dog even walked in under her own power, when I explained this dog competes and places 1st in agility competitions. Seriously her xrays would make you cry. Keeping her muscles strong has been the only help for her. She went in to UF for a total hip replacement ($5,000) and when they got in there there wasn't enough bone to securely place the implant. Since the vet was already in there, they did an FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) instead (cut the ball off). This was a very very in depth surgery, and the recovery is WICKED. This very active, very strong dog who was in nearly constant pain and never showed it until she started carrying her leg at an agility trial after 4 straight runs was in excruciating pain. The FHO is very very rehab intensive. We did laser treatments, underwater treadmill, electro-stim, physical therapy. It was VERY hard on me emotionally wondering if I did the right thing or not for my dog. It was very hard on Mihkoa too. Getting her to put weight on her leg again... seeing her in pain. It was hard. We did a ton of really intensive rehab... so if you do go this route be ready to spend even more on rehab, or your dog wont want to walk again. Mihkoa is now able to do agility again. She in fact did her very first trial about 14 months after her surgery with the rehab. Only one run. Its hard. Its really hard... Would I do it again to her? No, I wouldnt do it to her other hip. I am thankful we did the one hip, even though it was so hard.
Good luck...

Sports & Agility > How long did you train in agility before trialing?

| Barked: Mon Jan 2, '12 8:10pm PST | | | | | Me and my owner started agility when I was about 20 months old or so? Well, no we finished up when I was 20 months old, so at 18 months old I began training. I did my first trial at age 24 months old (2 years), so after only 6 months of training together. But let me just say... we are a natural team together and I will admit it, I'm a rock star on the course. But I guess we are the exception not the rule. (I earned my first title at my first trial ever & I'm Mom's 1st agility dog).
I think it all depends on you and your owner. How well do you know the obstacles? What level are you planning to start in and what venue? What are your agility goals? All things to consider for sure. Has your owner done agility before with other dogs? Those questions all play a big role I think in when to start. How well do you and your owner work together? I recommend not pushing too soon to trial though. I've seen a lot of dogs pushed too hard and too fast and sad things happen... where the dog doesn't want to play anymore or other things. Keeping it fun is the important part! If you have an agility fun group in your area where they do "mock trials" to give the dogs an "at the trial" feeling before starting out... I highly recommend it. Fun, and you get the atmosphere without ALL the pressure.
GOOD LUCK! | | | | |
