Service & Therapy Dogs > HUD housing and service dog question

Hey! I hear- people landing- on the Moon! |
| Barked: Tue Jan 15, '13 9:52am PST | | | | | Although we are not in HUD housing, we (daughter and I) recently moved to a new apartment building. We let them know up front that we have service dogs, and they never even asked for documentation (although we both have it, since we often end up traveling on the spur of the moment and airlines can be...well...special...at times).
Otherwise, they only allow cats there, and then only one and you have to pay monthly pet rent.
I was very pleasantly surprised at their attitude toward service dogs. It's generally been a pain in past housing circumstances.

Service & Therapy Dogs > Service Dog handler removed from Farmers Market

Hey! I hear- people landing- on the Moon! |
| Barked: Tue Jan 15, '13 9:43am PST | | | | | My daughter's service dog frequently is carried, but that's fine, as she's a medical alert dog (although not for seizure reasons). My daughter finally started carrying "I'm a Service Dog" cards for the gatekeepers who get their panties in a twist about a small breed service dog, which has helped a lot. Her SD has luxating patellas, but that doesn't affect her ability to do her job one bit.
My daughter doesn't always leave the cards with them, but has on occasion, when it appears that staff might need something to pass around to familiarize themselves with the law.

Chihuahua > Are all chihuahuas so sweet?
Beth
Hey! I hear- people landing- on the Moon! |
| Barked: Tue Jan 15, '13 9:37am PST | | | | | Chihuahuas can be very sweet with their own humans, but unless you deliberately socialize them, they can become very barky and snippy with others. They seem to have a natural desire to be protective of those they love, and will defend their human(s) against all comers, regardless of size.
Both of our Chis are service dogs, so it was important that they be carefully socialized so that they would be "safe" out in public, but I feel it is important that ALL dogs are socialized. The last thing anyone needs is to have their dog (f any breed) bite someone, ESPECIALLY a child who doesn't know any better and whose parent(s) aren't paying attention to what's going on.

Hey! I hear- people landing- on the Moon! |
| Barked: Tue Oct 9, '12 10:41am PST | | | | | The building we just moved into did not even question my need for a service dog or even imply they needed documentation, which rather surprised me, since they are a cat-only building (specified in their building information).
I'm glad they didn't put me through all of that, although I do have a current doctor's note for that possibility.
My daughter's dog is a Psychiatric Service Dog, as she has some issues that the dog has really helped her deal with. It's really been like night and day for her, and I'm really glad she has her now.

Service dogs do things such as alerting a disabled person to the approach of a medical condition, help the disabled person to focus on something else when the disabled person might be in a bad way, retrieve medications, phones, etc., when needed.
Being something intimidating is not in that repertoire.

Service & Therapy Dogs > My church rejected me because of my SD
Beth
Hey! I hear- people landing- on the Moon! |
| Barked: Sun Sep 23, '12 2:32pm PST | | | | | I recently went to the wedding of a family member who is part of the Christian Orthodox Church in the Bay area. They were cool about my bringing my service dog with me. I emailed first and asked the head priest if it'd be okay.
If you were in the Santa Rosa, CA area, I'd suggest going there, as they seem to be fairly enlightened (no pun intended) that way.

| Barked: Sun Sep 23, '12 2:26pm PST | | | | | Beth started as a medical alert dog, but does so much more now. My issue is with the gatekeeper types who can't understand that a service dog doesn't have to be a large breed dog.
I've taken to carrying some "I Am A Service Dog" foldable cards I got from SitStay.com (No, I don't work for them) They're cheap for 100 of them and I keep a small pile of them in the zipper pocket of Beth's vest for convenience.
