Just a quick nap- before bed- time!! |
| Barked: Wed Apr 24, '13 6:55pm PST | | | | | It's likely to be environmental, especially this time of year. 2 out of my 4 dogs have environmental allergies, as soon as the snow melts and the trees start to green up. My little beagle Toasty was so snotty, congested and watery eyes that she was swallowing all her post nasal drip and it was making her nauseous. She was gagging and vomiting up phlegm. Benadryl has literally ceased all her troubles. She gets 12.5mg every evening before bed. She weighs 19 lbs. | | | | |

Raw Food Diet > Enough variety over the next two months?
Feather
Just a quick nap- before bed- time!! |
| Barked: Sun Oct 21, '12 5:22am PST | | | | | Well that's about the best answer I could have hoped for! Thanks Maxwell!
I can see that I will have to get some red meats. I am not comfortable feeding this without other meats. And, you are right, way too much bone.
I may just use up The Honest Kitchen that I have in the pantry. I like the food and it might round out the diet for now, until I get more meats.
Thanks again! | | | | |

Raw Food Diet > Enough variety over the next two months?
Feather
Just a quick nap- before bed- time!! |
| Barked: Thu Oct 18, '12 11:36am PST | | | | | I just came home from Boston where I picked up over 100lbs of whole cornish hens (gizzards, organs and all), 48lbs of lamb hearts, and 40 lbs of boneless, skinless turkey thighs. I also have plenty of beef liver in the freezer for organs. If I feed this out over the next two months or so, will this be OK?
I usually buy plenty of beef and pork when I make the trip to buy in bulk, but couldn't on this trip because I couldn't get to that part of the city. I know I have been feeding raw for over 7 years, and I should know by now, but I have never NOT had red meats. This haul will last over 2 months for my 5 dogs.
Will this be Ok? Will Whole cornish hens, dark meat turkey, lamb hearts and beef liver be enough variety?

Raw Food Diet > Raw diet after spleen removal
Feather
Just a quick nap- before bed- time!! |
| Barked: Sun Aug 26, '12 5:34am PST | | | | | My hound Remy had her spleen removed over a year ago, last June, 2011. She had an almost 4 pound tumor growing on her spleen that ruptured, but it was benign. She eats raw, ate raw before and after her surgery, and has eaten raw ever since. We make up our own meals with meats, boney pieces and organs and do not do High Pressure Pasteurization premades. She eats what all the other dogs in the house eat. If we can, we get pasture fed organic, but not all the time. She does well, and I don't worry about her at all. I don't even think about her surgery anymore, or worry about anything with her.
I was told by my Vet to worry more about viral illnesses and URI's, and not so much about bacteria in meats. The only changes I made were, no more fostering dogs or puppies from the Southern states. We used to do a lot of fostering up here, but no more. God forbid a dog or puppy brought parvo or something into the house, she would have a hard time fighting it, because of her splenectomy.
Sorry to be long, but basically I feed an all raw diet, and don't worry about a thing!

Trouble is, we are raw feeders too and the cheapest meats are the fattiest cuts. My girls get growly tummies and bile vomits if I cut back too much.
HELP!!! I need advice......

Raw Food Diet > What made u switch to raw?
Feather
Just a quick nap- before bed- time!! |
| Barked: Fri Jun 22, '12 4:49am PST | | | | | I adopted Summer from the shelter in February 2005, she was a total mess! She was my first dog out on my own, and Matt and I chose the sickly, coughing, skinny, full of parasites and pneumonia beagle who was at the back of the shleter because "she wasn't going to make it". I said, I'll take that one!! We started to feed her the best kibbles, and she improved a bit. It wasn't until we started raw after listening to a talk on nutrition at the dog park the we dove in head first! The changes were dramatic, too numerous to name here. I only wish I had documented all of it with pictures and video. You would be amazed. Summer has been raw fed for 7 years now, and I have never looked back.
We have 5 dogs now, most of them came home from the shelter where I volunteered because I would see a sorry sight and say "That dog needs a raw diet!". Most came home in various states of disrepair and have thrived on raw. Feather came home at age 10 years in 2006, immediately began raw, and is now a healthy and happy (and slightly arthritic) senior/geriatric Lab!
Over the years I have done different things, veggies, no veggies, supplements, no supplements, but in the end, always come back to meat/boneymeat/organ in the 80-10-10 ratio, or thereabouts. One of my beagles that I adopted in 2010 had pre-existing kidney issues from ehrlichia and can not have bone (too much phosphorus). But, she eats a premix with meat and organ (the calcium is in the premix) and she does wonderful. No veggies here at all, and no kibble in 7 years. Something must be working because everyone has great blood work, all in normal ranges, even my kidney patient! And, no one can believe that Feather is pushing 16 years old!
If I could learn how to get video on here, I would show a video of everyone eating, Feather is quite a riot!!!

Saying Goodbye: Memorials & Support > Lantis has crossed the bridge

Just a quick nap- before bed- time!! |
| Barked: Thu Jun 14, '12 4:17am PST | | | | | We are so sorry to hear of LAntis's passing. He did so well for so long, because he was loved and cared for so well.
I want to also thank you for your advice in the past regarding booties and harnesses for my senior Feather, and also raw feeding techniques for senior dogs! Having a large senior dog with mobility issues is a tough thing but you did such a great job with Lantis, and thanks for the advice for Feather.
WE really are sorry, and just know that he knew he had an entire extended family that loved him!
Take care... | | | | |

Raw Food Diet > How much does raw cost you per month?
Feather
Just a quick nap- before bed- time!! |
| Barked: Thu May 31, '12 10:45am PST | | | | | Max, I think the shipping is making it cost $28.00 per month. And yes, if it wasn't for shipping, Saddogsushi would be my all time immediate choice for ground raw!
I have 5 dogs eating raw here, we spend well over a hundred dollars a month, sometimes close to $200. a month. I hate figuring it out, makes me cringe. Don't tell Matt, he would kill me, he thinks I get it soooooo much cheaper.
Stella and Chewy's around here in Massachusetts costs $28.00 per 6lb bag of patties.

Raw Food Diet > Need some input please ...
Feather
Just a quick nap- before bed- time!! |
| Barked: Thu May 24, '12 7:14am PST | | | | | I totally agree with Max.
We don't get a whole heck of alot of variety here, and my 5 dogs are doing very well. Kibble has loads of ground up bones in all those "meals". I would add meats and eggs, if possible, then a big boney/meaty part for entertainment. I'm not sure if I would add any organs, with all those synthetic vitamins and minerals in kibble, might interfere, no? Maybe I am wrong.
As for variety, we do mostly beef, chicken and pork and their organs, add in some eggs and canned fish. That's about it. Lamb only comes around when there are good prices or when I can get some lamb shanks about to expire at Market Basket.
No kibble at all here, but I think a kibble diet supplemneted with raw is a great thing if you can't do all raw!!
