I'm so sorry this happened to you. I hope that everything works out okay. I would think it's a good sign that they're letting you keep Callie in your own yard. I've only witnessed one dog bite and animal control let them keep their dog at home for the 10 day quarantine. That dog ultimately did not get taken away nor put to sleep. So hopefully all will be well. hug

Choosing the Right Dog > You shouldn't get a _____ if ______.

You shouldn't get a PUG if:

- you value your privacy
- you don't want a dog at your heels every time you move
- you don't want a dog that sleeps at least 12 hours a day, 18-20 hours some days
- you don't want a dog that treats you as if you're his whole world
- you don't want to find his fur EVERYWHERE
- you can't stand being stared at while you eat
- you don't want a dog that steals your seat and hogs your covers
- you want a swimming partner
- you want a jogging partner
- you want to exercise your dog outdoors on warm days
- you want a serious dog
- you want a sure-footed, graceful, or dainty dog
- you want a dog that doesn't mind normal grooming (ears, nails, brushing, etc)
- if constant snoring, snorting, snuffling, huffing, puffing, sighing, coughing, sneezing, panting, or lip-smacking bothers you (I sound like a NyQuil commercial) laugh out loud

Puppy Place > Outside Distractions - Pooping Inside

Capone

Walking him around a little bit should help with that. It'll be harder for him to get distracted if he's moving and I've always found a brisk walk brings out the poop in my dogs. Capone can poop in our yard before we go on a walk, but I still have to bring baggies because after a few minutes of walking he'll inevitably go again. And when I let him out in our fenced in back yard to go, he always trots for a good distance around the yard before going.

If you feel like your pup should have to poop but he didn't and you bring him back in, I'd keep him on leash and tethered to you so at the first sign that he's looking for a place to go you can bring him right back out.

Good luck!

Behavior & Training > Flexi-lead rant

Wow, that is ridiculous and very dangerous for those dogs!

I used to use a Flexi for Capone but I always kept it short when we were walking down the sidewalk. Then when we got to a grassy area, I could let it out for him to explore a bit and reel him back in when it was time to move on. I cannot even imagine doing some of the things you all are describing. I would be terrified for my dog's safety.

Dog Health > What monthly preventives do you use...? Heartgard, flea and tick...anything else..?

I use Heartgard all year long because I'd rather be safe than sorry when it comes to that. But I don't use any flea or tick preventatives. Capone doesn't spend a ton of time outdoors so we've never had much of an issue. I use flea treatments only when needed and the few ticks I've found on him, I've just removed immediately.

Seriously?! What is wrong with those people? naughty

Thank goodness she has a great home now with you. She's still young. Hopefully with a lot of love and affection, she'll realize she doesn't have to be afraid anymore.

Food & Nutrition > 4Health Dog Food Grain-free

Capone

Noms for the- pug...

I started Capone on 4Health just about 2 months ago and I've been really pleased with it. I compared all the foods that I could find locally in my price range on dogfoodadvisor.com and 4Health was the best that I could afford at 4 stars so I decided to try it. So far I'm not regretting that decision at all.

Capone has problems with ear infections and allergies. Since putting him on 4Health his ears have cleared up tremendously. His allergies appeared to get better at first but the past few weeks they've been pretty bad. But some, if not all, of that is seasonal. I've got him on the regular salmon and potato formula right now but I plan on switching varieties until I find one that works best for him. I might go with the grain free fish option next. I haven't decided. But I like that they have plenty of variety to choose from.

Capone got a red flag for Energy, which I guess is because he's low energy. But what do you expect from a 12 year old pug. He only got the red flag in the "all dogs" category, not dogs of the same breed. So that makes sense.

He also got red flags for "Grooming Self" and "Grooming Others". I am assuming that's because I put that he sometimes licks himself or me excessively. He licks his own paws because of allergies and that's a constant work in progress. But when I stop him from licking himself, he redirects to my feet and legs sometimes which I think is just a licking obsession. And I do allow it because it doesn't bother me.

So no real surprises for me. Overall, Capone scored very well. That was fun! Thanks for posting it.

Out of your list, my favorites are Oliver, Finnegan and Theodore along with their associated nicknames. As an alternative to Finn I also like Flynn.

If you currently have a dog named Jake, I personally wouldn't use Jace or Jax for the new puppy just because that could get confusing since they sound similar.

Congrats on the upcoming puppy and have fun choosing a name! blue dog

Dog Health > Hardwood/Laminate floors and joints
Capone

Noms for the- pug...

Barked: Thu May 2, '13 7:31am PST
When we bought our first house, I was specifically looking for carpet for Capone but it was so hard to find since the trend was hardwood. I finally found a place that was partially carpeted (just the living room) and met my other requirements.

I've found that Capone only lays on the carpeted area or on rugs that I placed in the other rooms. I put down rugs next to the bed for him to use as landing/launching pads and as he got older I also purchased some stairs to help him access the furniture. The problem with the pet steps on hardwood is that they slide. You have to put rubber or something sticky under them or brace them against multiple pieces of furniture. Same with small rugs or runners, you'll want the sticky rubber mats under them to keep them in place.

When Capone tears through the house while playing he does sometimes slip on the hardwood. He's never hurt himself doing it, but he doesn't have knee or joint problems like your two. So I second the suggestion of carpet runners for you along any path that they're likely to run through the apartment.
