I'm working on- three toys!

Thank. I tried to take a look at got a "404" page notice. Do you know if you have to be signed up for the blog or anything like that to access part of the site? I'll try again later today when I have more time. In the mean time, thanks much for your suggestion, Maxwell.

Also, as an add-on question to my original post, do you know if it's OK (assume so) to feed some raw food with some cooked food, and to feed some raw food with kibble? I'm exploring my options if I don't think I can keep up home cooking, and Honest Kitchen is looking better and better. The "Zeal" food looks good to me. It has fish (cooked) and other ingredients, which I assume are their usual uncooked and then dehydrated foods. If I used Zeal, I would have to transition from kibble, hence the question about whether I can feed two different types of foods at the same time, at least for a while.

I was wondering if anyone has a nutritionally balanced recipe for a meal using fish, or if not, something other than turkey or chicken - and perhaps not even duck, as it's related to turkey, I guess. I have been trying to find a food for my dog, who may have food allergies.

I know about nutritiondata.com, but don't think I'd be able to figure out to create a recipe on there.

I will probably make a separate post on this, but I was wondering Maxwell or anyone on here has used the supplement "Balance It" with the addition of a chosen carb and protein and the recipe generated by that site. I am not up to home cooking all of Joey's meals from scratch, and also don't know if I am capable of creating a recipe using Nutritiondata.com. With someone's help before, I created one with turkey, but I would now like to come up with something fairly simple using fish. The Balance It route sounds fairly easy, except that there is not a fish option, and the closest thing, salmon, gets pretty expensive as I'm not willing to use farm raised salmon, only wild salmon.

I'm not a raw feeder, but I DO have an allergic (we think, anyway - still working on it) dog and I know how frustrating it is. It is hard to know if a dog is allergic/intolerant of food, environmental or contact allergens, or what.

As to food, have you thought about Sojos or Honest Kitchen? Unfortunately, many of their foods contain chicken, but some don't, so it may be worth looking into them. They don't seem too outrageously expensive. As to the kibbles available, yes, there are a bunch of them targeted toward allergic dogs, but so far I haven't found the magic one for Joey - if he actually has food allergies at all.

There's a yahoo group called Canine Allergy Solutions or something like that. A couple people on there feed raw, and know of a few good sources for raw meats. Maybe you could ask on that group.

Of course, going to a derm vet for a consultation is not cheap, but some people do that.

I would take him to the vet. Bumps can be so many different things!

I am considering using "Balance It" along with homecooking, at least for half of Joey's meals. While I don't know if his paw licking is due to food or environmental allergies (or OCD/boredom/low thyroid/something else), I figure anything's better than kibble.

You buy the "Balance It" supplement from the company's web site, and use their free recipes to go along with it. The recipes are pretty simple - you choose a protein, a carb, and occasionally something else. The recipe computes how much "Balance It" you need to complete the nutritional requirements (correct ratio of phosphorus to calcium, vitamins and minerals, etc.)

It's my understanding that the skin (prick) testing is only for environmental allergies, and that serum only works for about 60% of the dogs that it is used on. I only know of one person who has had it done, but it turned out to be accurate and a lifesaver for her dog (bichon frise).

I am also curious about NutriScan, but want to hear if it's actually accurate before I spend any money on it. I hope someone who has used it will reply to your post!

I think some dogs are having problems now in some parts of the country because heat has been turned on, and their skin is drier than usual.

Low thyroid can cause itchiness, too.

I hope I'm not hijacking this thread, but I was wondering what glucosamine supplements are usually made from. Can anyone enlighten me? I know someone who's trying very hard to determine what her dog is allergic to. She gives him glucosamine/condroiten (spelling?), and I sometimes wonder if he could be allergic to that.

Dog Health > Lumps on side of neck?...

There are lots of things that can be in her poop but not noticeable. If she drinks standing water from a stream she can be infected with giardia. Lyme disease ultimately causes lameness. Lumps near her neck could be her lymph nodes, lipomas or tumors. I'm not sure what to recommend here, other than the obvious (taking both dogs out on a leash; applying for Care Credit or saving some money for a vet visit).

Assuming she's not a chewer, you might try putting down clean sheets over any carpeting in areas she spends a lot of time in. Is there any mold or dust in the apartment? Can you wipe down her feet (including pads, and in between toes) when she comes in from being outside? The food you're feeding sounds good, but are you changing it too abruptly or frequently? My dog licks his paws more if I change up too much.) Are you giving treats that are wheat or corn based? Is your apartment really dry and too warm? Sometimes a dog's skin gets too dry in the winter when the heat is on.

The vet might want to get a skin culture to make sure there's no yeast, bacterial infection, etc. It sounds like fleas have been the biggest problem in the past (and one flea hiding somewhere might still be the culprit) but other things that cause itching are: low thyroid, mast cell tumors (tiny things attached to the skin - but not just little sores), anxiety, boredom, and OCD.

Good luck!
