In addition it's common to have a "Trial visit" so your therapy dog fits the needs of the facility. I do recommend registering with one of therapy dog organizations, for your own protection against accident liabilities. With Therapy Dog International, there is a look-up for evaluator in your geographical area. If there is no evaluator available in your area they do accept your CGC plus a letter from the AKC obedience judge for limited membership. I learned that with GSDs (perhaps other breeds too)rewarding the good behavior works very well. When I was potty training the girls, I rewarded them with lots of praise (in a high pitched voice!) whenever they pottied outside. I even jump up and down, showing how happy I was (I call it our "potty-dance") I am sure my neighbors thought I was a nut-case!!! My hubby is no longer allowed to put his soda on the coffee table.! Well it's not so bad though - my former coworker has a male rottweiler with a natural tail. He cracked the screen of her 52" LCD TV with his wagging tail!
