Sorry, haven't researched this, but title II and title III of the ADI states that "entities must permit service animals to accompany people with disabilities in all areas where members of the public are allowed to go".

Seems to me that the a jail isn't an area that the "public is allow to go" - at least not without restrictions.

I thought that all US government buildings (post offices, etc) can deny access.shrug I'm mainly out of the country these days, but did the laws change that much while I was gone?laugh out loud

Ditto what Happy said.

In addition, some dogs will pull a wheelchair - some won't.smile If your dog isn't happy doing it, you shouldn't make them!

That's the downside of having a dog you already own being designated a SD - you can't specify what your needs are.

PLEASE, have a health clearance (x-rays, etc) for your dog before you try to get them to be a mobility assistance or pulling dog!

Service & Therapy Dogs > Service dogs and tax deductions in Canada

Specifically,

I received a notice from Revenue Canada that in order to allow the expenses incurred by Otto, "we need proof the animal has been provided by an organization, one whose main purposes is the training of such animals."

thinking

Interesting, since I'm unaware of any federal laws about any kind of assistance dogs, only provincial laws. Since Canada Revenue is Federal, I'm wondering what they base their requirement on.

I get the credit for a person with a disability and have taken Otto's expenses off for years. This is the first year I got this request.

As of now, they are not allowing the deduction but if they "receive additional information at a later date, we will review your return for a possible adjustment."

Unfortunately, Scruffy, we are talking about "mobility" here, where size - of both the dog and the handler - are very important for the well being of both.shrug

How large are you? I'm not only talking height but weight.

I've seen some pretty hefty people using SDs for mobility work.shrug

Looks like Texas doesn't grant public access to SDITs who are owner trained.

To stay within the law, do your training in pet friendly places or ask permission to train in certain places.

Once your dog graduates to full SD status the ADA takes precedence and it won't matter who trained your dog.

Swimming is great, but to build muscle mass you should try to find somewhere that does an aqua treadmill. Just what it sounds like - walking a treadmill with different levels of water.

It can work wonders, and uses muscles swimming doesn't touch.

Otto does both.happy dance
