If you tell an owner their dog is in constant pain they sometimes wake up. Explain how bathing a matted dog is like bathing them in a too tight wool sweater, it's itchy, uncomfortable and can lead to skin infections. If you really want to scare them tell them you aren't sure you can do it, she needs to go to a vet and be put to sleep to have the mats clipped off.
