Behavior & Training > Lancer's reactivity problem risen- nearly runs to his death
Rascal
Silly |
| Barked: Sat May 11, '13 6:52am PST | | | | | This is why I am not a fan of some petsmart trainers! All dogs need different training.
In my experience I think a harness is a big no no for a dog with lunging or reactivity problems.
Why are you giving them all the power?
My dogs wear their harnesses only for pulling( we rollerblade). I could never imagine walking them on their harness.
What about a gentle leader? That could give you the control over his head and grab his attention. If that is still not working you could try a prong collar, thats my favorite tool.
The pinch can sometimes snap them right out of their mindset, and gives you control. Although i have seen the prong collar work in the opposite way and make the dog more reactive.
Look up the dominant dog collar, that is really good, fallsafe if your harness or anything else becomes unclipped. Looks like you need a new trainer for him

Dog Health > What monthly preventives do you use...? Heartgard, flea and tick...anything else..?
Tucker
SQUIRREL! ! |
| Barked: Mon May 6, '13 7:05am PST | | | | | Well if your not concerned about Ticks sentinel is a great product. It kills 3 intestinal parasites and prevents heartworm, and prevents fleas from breeding (if you bring some home!)
Since they took interceptor off the market I am still a tiny bit confused as to what I want to do.
I need some kind of tick preventive since I take my dogs to the woods.
I find that if you live in an area where it is warm for most of the year there is no sense in risking your dog getting heartworm.
I give it all year no matter the weather. I would prefer to keep my dogs safe then risk a few months. I am not a medication kind of person, but knowing what heartworms will do and kill my dog, yeah Ill stay on the meds. My neighbor also doesn't use heartworm preventive for their dog, so chances are he will become positive and infect all the surrounding mosquitoes that also bite my dogs

Behavior & Training > What should of happened different?
Tucker
SQUIRREL! ! |
| Barked: Mon May 6, '13 6:55am PST | | | | | Yeah I tried to. But it stuck with me because all his other interactions were great. I did look back to say wow I didn't know he actually had self control when confronted with a bad situation. Maybe the work I have been doing is paying off?
I generally don't like dog parks for most people, but I do like going to socialize the dogs and let them run around. I don't go towards the middle because people just sit at the tables and it seems like a bad situation there, we walk for about an hour and then leave.
Thanks! I kept trying to let it go but I couldn't. I was mad he reacted at all I'll have to be better about watching the other dogs like I used to!

Behavior & Training > What should of happened different?
Tucker
SQUIRREL! ! |
| Barked: Sun May 5, '13 7:25am PST | | | | | So been working with my naughty man Tucker. He has some issues with dogs, and Ive basically narrowed it down to unaltered dogs, and territorial issues with dogs.
He had some health problems last year so we are just getting out into the world again!
Went to the dog park with a few friends, we walk around the perimeter and not stand in the middle waiting for something bad to happen lol.
We were there for about an hour and a half Tucker was running, happy, made a few friends.
A large chocolate lab which I feel I have encountered in the past was walking the fence line inside the park. I don't recall exactly how Tucker approached but Im pretty sure the lab wasn't for it and he started snapping at Tucker. Unfortunately this time I went into duh mode and hardly moved.
Tucker ended up air snapping back near the dogs head for about 5 seconds.
Now I was happy to see he has control over his canine teeth, but unhappy he reacted at all. And pissed that 1 dumb dog had to start crap.
The lady left immediately with her dog, made me believe he has done this before. We stayed to have some positive experiences and all went well.. Now in hind sight I believe I should of been watching that dogs body language( which I wasn't really watching anything! or looking in that direction) and told Tucker to leave it. I saw him try to walk away but crabby chocolate lab kept insisting on arguing.
Im glad he can "argue" instead of fight, but it sounds so nasty that it stuck with me all day

Dog Health > mometamax/ear/deafness risk
Tucker
SQUIRREL! ! |
| Barked: Sun May 5, '13 7:12am PST | | | | | I don't think its as common as you think, but yes it can happen. I am a LVT at a vet and people like to "self treat" their animals all the time with in particular mometamax. Once I tell them please dont do that until we see your pet they could end up deaf from it then they usually listen!
Its a good medication out there but there are others then have less side effects.
To be honest if you get a ear cleaning solution for dogs. One that is claimed to dry out the ears. My favorite is Epi otic. Clean the ears out when you think there is a problem, weekly, after bathing swimming, playing in rain. You may never have an infection again. Sometimes food or allergies can play a role in ear infections too.

Dog Health > Dog ate hair?
Rascal
Silly |
| Barked: Thu May 2, '13 3:17pm PST | | | | | Depending on how long the hair was I would be concerned if she doesn't get better soon. Long hair could work like string and cut up her intestines. If that happens, shes in for big trouble. Id take her in if she doesn't eat normal and stool doesn't become normal soon. | | | | |
