Huckleberry The opposite of- cross-eyed.     Barked: Sat Jan 5, '13 3:16pm PST  When Huck got his first rabies vaccine he got really itchy at first, REALLY obsessive about chewing and a few days later he got violently ill. He also developed a lump at the injection site that lasted for almost three months. I kept asking the vet if it could have been a reaction to the vaccine. I found so many people online that had the same exact experience. The first vets that saw him where I take him would not say that it could be related to the vaccine. I took him back to the vet a couple weeks after I had originally taken him in when he was sick and the vet I saw said it absolutely did sound like it may have been a reaction. She sent a report to the manufacturer of the vaccine and made a note in his records for next time. I have been all over the place with what I have tried for my pets over the years and I have learned a lot. I have had some pets that did terrible on the highest quality pet foods, and really great on crap and vice versa. Four out of five of my cats developed bladder crystals and UTIs on Nature's Variety. My dog Huck just happens to do best on Acana and falls apart on other foods. One of my friends had a dog who had explosive tummy trouble if he ate anything other than Beneful. Huckleberry The opposite of- cross-eyed.     Barked: Mon Dec 24, '12 11:37am PST  According to my brother, who is also Huckleberry's dog trainer, mental stimulation can be just as exhausting, if not more so, than physical exercise When I am tired on my day off and don't feel like walking Huck very far I do a few 5-10 minute training sessions throughout the day. I have him sit, lay, come, leave it, drop it, spin, twist, crawl, pretty much anything I can think of. He loves it, and he passes out afterwards. A Kong filled with food/yogurt/treats which has been frozen can also provide mental stimulation. Just make sure you take the training treats out of his daily allotment of food. Also, are there any doggie daycares in your area? Small Dogs > Good treats for training for small dogs?

Huckleberry weighs 11 lbs and I tend to have to cut up all of his training treats into smaller pieces, even the ones that are made for small dogs. The ones I use that are easy to cut up are Cloud Star Tricky Trainers, Wild Side Freeze Dried Salmon, Mini Yumzies, and Zukes Mini Naturals. My vet sells a great one called Lean Treats, they are about the size of a grape and are very soft. I can usually take one Lean Treat on a training walk and pull tiny specks off as we go. Huck thinks he is eating steak! Wet Noses Little Stars Organic Training Treats are crunchy and are small enough so that they don't need to be cut up, and I usually give Huck a little less dinner when we use those. My vet did not print out anything with side effects listed when Huck got the vaccine, and when I asked if this could be side effects from the vaccine she said no. Huckleberry The opposite of- cross-eyed.     Barked: Sat Dec 15, '12 7:37pm PST  Hi Everyone! Has anyone here ever had a dog who had side effects from the bordetella vaccine? Huck had his last Monday, and this morning he woke up with lots of sniffles and a clear nasal discharge. He also has done some reverse sneezing twice, and sounds congested. He was licking his nose a lot. No coughing. I called the vet this morning and she said to give him benadryl twice a day and she also was going to send home some antibiotics with my neighbor who is a vet tech in case his nasal discharge turned yellow/green over the weekend. The benadryl did make a noticeable difference. He is resting comfortably now with no sniffles. The vet said this is not a side effect of the bordetella vaccine. I am worried about Huck because he got very very sick a few days after he had his first rabies vaccine. I always thought it was a delayed reaction then too. He had severe vomiting, diarreha with blood and he was very itchy. He recovered completely after a few days and a few vet visits.
