Oh hey, I found a trainer that lives in my area through the Association of Pet Dog Trainers website!
Here's her site.

What do you guys think...? Should I try, or possible phony?

Thanks for the links Jackson! No need for rollover links heheh. smile

And thanks Gizmo for the book rec. I'll be getting that for sure.

I'm not sure where to find a specific reactivity trainer. Through a petsmart again? Probably not...

Speaking of removing stimuli that gets him riled up altogether... in your guys' opinion, should I be still attempting to get Lancer accustomed to stranger dogs, or go the route of avoidance? He's been fearful of stranger dogs ever since we got him, though now it's evolved into this aggression-rooted-in-fear thing.

I think I've mentioned this before in another thread, but Lancer has had a scarring experience at the dog park when he was around 5 months old that caused his initial shy-fear to turn into this aggressive-fear. A group of 10 or so dogs apparently hounded him when he and my mom were making their way out. Mom was supposedly bringing him during "quiet" times in an attempt to socialize him with other dogs, and eh... it went very well five timse, and the sixth time, that incident happened. Geez.

It makes me wonder if he ever will have the possibility of being calm around other dogs. Hermit and private parks for life? confused

Thanks for the suggestions regarding cars though. I think I'll try covering the window with a sheet first, if that's okay. shock

May I ask what a roman or step in back clip is? I'm been trying to find the best harness available safe out there- not sure what's appropriate. shock

We have invested in a private trainer for 2 months- just some trainer from Petsmart. She used positive reinforcement methods: redirecting his attention whenever we spot a dog across the street or a car is about to drive by. It didn't end up working very efficiently... that's to say, his attention the dog or car would sometimes override his attention on me, and he would bark and pull a few anyway.

When we're on the road with him, he would stick his head out the window to bark at any car that drives by too. He quiets down when I tell him "quiet", but too many cars at once would still get him riled up again. I've initially (very initially.....) tried the whole conditioning deal, feeding him a treat whenever he sees a car, but that didn't help crap. He would just quickly take my treat before sticking his head out back to bark LOL. It's the same deal whether I leave the window opened or closed.

Thanks for the reply, Jackson. =)

I'm not sure if anyone lingering around still remembers Lancer's old problem of barking at everyone and everything that moves- this was a few months ago.

He's now 7.5 months old- socializing and training has been going quite well. He's learned to ignore (tolerate) stranger dogs on a walk and ignore cars driving by... Unfortunately, if another dog barks at him first, he's still unable to resist the urge to bark back. But his mind's still sane enough to listen to "quiet" commands.

Today, a new dog barked at Lancer from half a block away, causing him to already lose his cool- then at the same time, two cars drove by, and he abruptly went utterly insane in an attempt to chase after the cars, his leash somehow clipped loose, and my mom had to jump on him before he ran to his death.

We thought his issue had been trained to a safe degree, but this incident makes me think not... Too many things happening at the same time breaks his tolerance.

I wasn't with Lancer and Mom today, but I'll be home with them over the weekend to help out and think about how to further help his case.

I really need some advice on his issue.

Lancer is able to put up this mental shield to ignore the dogs and cars, but it's apparently too fragile. If my mom didn't jump on him, he would have been run over. I'm at my wits end.

Just an FYI, I've read through the posts- and apologies to those who called me out on not being specific enough. But yes, I was meaning toward Tiller and Watson's interpretation: Being the same dog in every public situation, unflappable, assured, confident, and calm in regards to the more "common issues" like cars, crazy kids, other dogs, and possibly excited strangers who want to scream and pet and hug your dog. wink

I'm aware of the individual dog phenomenon... and that's great! But just in this particular thread, I'm inquiring about... the standard of the breeds, assuming I'm talking reputable breeders who aim for temperament.

And I am following all your posts and knowledge and experience, taking it all in as sacred insight... BOL. I suppose I'll apologize in advance if I'm not the type of person who has a load to say, but I do have a lot to learn, and your insight and experience is SACRED KNOWLEDGE (and interesting observations) in my mind.

Augusta, this potential Newfie or well-bred Golden won't be working with autistic children or the like, just as a pet who will be going lots of places with various people and situations... and with most likely a baby to toddler to possible little kiddo in the house, if the dog lives that long. I admit, I am trying as hard as possible to NOT try to fit a square peg into a round hole.

Watson, I wouldn't want to pester you at THIS very moment about reputable Golden breeders, because this dog won't be coming until at least a year from now. I was thinking to myself to pmail you when the time nears, hoping you're still on dogster then!

My silence is in attempt to be polite. LOL

Selli, good point on their weight in emergency situations... how would that issue be solved? But I suppose I don't need to worry about that until I do start living with a Newfoundland. confused

But I'm so glad to hear such great stories about them! I appreciate the extensive anecdotes, it really gives me an almost personal feel for the breed. I'll keep looking back on this thread when making my decision.
It's sad to hear that they have such a short lifespan... seems like a common con among the giant breeds. frown

Dr. Watson, if possible, I am looking for a medium~large, over the giants. Unfortunately, I also personally can't stand too much drool- though I'm sure if I really DID end up with a Newfie, I would fall in love and wouldn't mind religiously wiping the drool every hour. laugh out loud

Tiller and Watson, I assume for Goldens then, there are many mill breeders who end up with ... straying temperaments? I've only been acquainted with five goldens in my life, and three of them weren't even close to the "bomb-proof" that we're talking about atm. I guess if I had to go into the story a bit, one eight year old female Golden suddenly had an irk with Kityra at the dog park, and went snarling after her for no apparent reason... seemingly in attempt to just scare her, if anything. A five year old male in my neighborhood gets really riled up seeing either of my dogs, and goes barking his head off from across the street whenever we pass by (and gets Lancer into a frenzy too....). What do you think of the breeding of Goldens these days? Do you think their capricious temperaments are more commonly the fault of the owner or the breeding? How would you recommend going about the issue? Is it even a substantial issue, or... am I just particularly unlucky with the Goldens I've met?

I'm located in Southern California. Then again, if there are other medium~large breeds that can near equal the Newfie in "bomb-proof"ness that I can know about, I'd love to know! It's currently sounding like the number one "medium newfie" is a well-bred Golden though-

I don't want to ask too much of you, but I'd be obliged if you have the time to spread the Newfoundland knowledge!
