Rescue, Adoption & Happy Endings > The No-Kill Movement
Bello

I was just wondering how many had heard of it? Maybe not as self explanatory as I think, but is aimed at no longer killing dogs in shelters that are healthy and adoptable and should ideally have around a 95% save rate, instead of the 70% kill rate my shelter has (the Memphi Animal Shelter).

Nathan Winograd is the pusher of this movement, and I bought his book Redemption by chance at Barnes and Noble, it was the only copy there, and I haven't seen another one. I'm hoping to get his other two books (on the no-kill movement) for Christmas.

I see us often talking about "pet overpopulation" and killing healthy dogs in shelters and realized that as far as a movement is going, that it seems like no one has even heard of it, which is surprising because I generally come to dogster and learn like crazy about all aspects of dog ownership.

I'm not going to mention my views all the way (I think some can be figured out, just in the fact I am posting this) and was just wondering how many have HEARD of it, and for those who have heard of it, and read about it and the methods that need to be taken to lower killing in shelters, what do you think?

Some links:
Nathan Winograd's facebook page
No Kill Advocacy facebook page.

No Kill advocacy Website If you go under shelter reform, there is a bit more information on the steps that they say need to be taken, though the book is more complete. Most of the booklets are PDFs so that you don't have to buy a book, though from the slight skimming of the PDFs they don't seem as indepth as the book (obviously).

Bello uses me to wipe his face after dinner. He's nice like that. He also stares at me if something is in his way where he wants to get on the couch until I get the hint and move it. He's also learned that when I'm not paying attention to him and surfing the web (which is often), that if he comes and stands right next to me, I'll start rubbing him absentmindedly. He'll move back and forth so I scratch his whole back line. lol

I support the use of it in the case of the shelter dogs, it worked, and saved his life, and like the trainer said, he didn't have anything to lose, if he failed, well the dog was going to die anyway. And he didn't have to the time to do it through positive reinforement means.

I would be interested in more information on how he trained the dog (and I guess how others are doing it). It is hard to wrap my head around getting that kind of response out of a dog through shocking, albeit very light shocks.

Dogs & Travel > Dog-sitter or Kennel?

Well, my mom and I do professional pet sitting, so I'm biased in that regard. I know Brittany has always HATED going to kennels, and depending on the kennel they go to, they don't get out much anyway (there's a local one around here, that dogs always come home exhausted because he spends so much time with them. big grin ).

Britt and Bello both stay with my friend if we have to leave them. Even my mom and I don't like staying longer with pets then we have too because we want to go home to OUR own animals. So what I would say is offer incentives to your friend to encourage her to stay longer. For my friend it was the ability to bring her dog with her.

I know there are many people on this forum who choose not to vaccinate their dogs, and they are not continually sick. So I don't view not vaccinating as being a bad owner. If you can't afford to fix your dog, well, that's okay too, but you better control your dog so that it isn't reproducing. Controlling a dog doesn't take much money. I understand taking in a dog off the streets. Saying "well if you can't 100 percent afford a stray then you shouldn't take them in." Because its better to release them back onto the streets? Or take them to the shelter? (which in most cases around here will be put to sleep, so you more or less sentenced a dog to death)

If you purposely go and get another animal that you can't afford, then yeah, I totally agree, they are being irresponsible, but if they find the animal on the streets and take them in because others won't, then I think they are trying to be a good person.

Brittany does not walking off with people that are not in our family. And she used to quit eating when I went out of town. I know one day when a friend and I went to PetSmart, I was having issues with both Britt and Bello, so I gave my friend Brittany. She tried to walk her away. Brittany slipped out of her collar and came running back.

Missy, Brittany would too. If Britt and Missy wouldn't sit and try and attack each other they could kill all the rats in the basement with teamwork! rainbow

That rainbow is their teamwork super-hero symbol. ;D

Behavior & Training > How has your dog embarrassed you in public

Bello

I can't take Bello to pet stores without him peeing on things. We've actually been going more recently trying to work on it. He was doing so well, smelling things and then actively resisting the urge on his own, I was so proud, I turn around to look at something, turn back around to him with his leg hiked up peeing all over one of the stands. red face Then to rub it in, he walked a few feet away and scratched his back paws. Gotta make sure any other dogs get the message right.

And then when ever we go for walks, for the love of dog, EVERYTIME, there is a person outside, they will ALWAYS choose that yard to go poop in. And despite the fact I'm picking it up, WHY. WHY MUST THEY GO IN THAT YARD. Seriously, they couldn't wait one more house?

Ohh, and Bello has peed on me in public. Twice in one day while at a Woofstock event thing, and then once when we were outside a pet store. meditate I could kill him. I try to tell myself to be flattered, that he at least wants to make sure I'm his. But pee down my jeans, no sir. He better watch it or he might be waking up a girl. And I can't even win. If I give him a loose leash, he pees on stuff I don't want him too. If I hold him close. I risk being a walking fire hydrant.

Get a large amount of fenced in land for Bello so he can run to his hearts content preferrably with woods so that Brittany has squirrells to chase. I'd want one of those pools with a beach entrance, salt water, kind so that Brittany and Bello can easily join me in the pool and get out. Along with the fact that when everyone is cannon balling into the pool, Brittany will have waves to chase. I'd buy an SUV so that my car had more room for the mutts, and probably buy a nice RV so that I can be a traveling crazy dog lady, you know, for those that have never seen one. ;D

ETA: Ohh a full agility set would be awesome, add me in for one of those. I'd also buy like the fancy dog beds I'm too cheap to afford, so instead currently my poor dogs have to sleep on the couch instead. ;D I'd also be able to buy more protein sources for the mutts to eat.

Behavior & Training > Confessions of a bad owner...
Brittany

I always get the- last bark.

Barked: Sat Aug 18, '12 11:13am PST
Alright, I'll have to go back and read these before I forget how I'm a bad owner.

~I have hit Bello and Brittany (hate myself everytime for it, getting better and not getting so frustrated).
~Bello pulls on leash.
~Bello is dog reactive.
~Brittany is dog aggressive.
~Bello jumps on visitors/strangers.
~I walk Brittany off leash (at like 1 in the morning, no one else walks that late).
~I leave them in the car during winter, spring, and fall while I do things.
~I'm not always quick to take them to the vet.
~Brittany barks too much.
~Brittany is always offleash at home.
~They aren't crated/seatbelted when we drive.
~I drive with Brittany in my lap.
~They aren't crated when left at home
~Brittany isn't crate trained.
~They beg.
~They don't wear collars unless we are going somewhere. But I don't consider it bad. I've seen 2 pairs of dogs get caught on each other's collars. And nearly die from it.

ETA:
~Bello is regurarly on a tie out (or dog run, one of those connected between two trees, he learned to dig up the stake when we first got him, sneaky mutt).
~I use No. (I don't consider that bad though).
~Bello marks in pet stores. We are working on it.
~I walk them both on retractable leashes if we go to parks, etc.
~I let them chase animals as long as they aren't cats (and sometimes Bello chases them before I can stop him).
~I let Bello pull me on rollar blades when it isn't so hot out.
~I let Bello bite me hard enough to leave welts, and if people hit me, he'll bite at them too, and I refuse to correct it.
~Bello was an impulse adoption (and Brittany basically was too).
~I only feed them once a day.
~Don't have a vet, we switch around a lot.
~Probably not going to vaccinate anymore.
~They only get flea prevention when they have fleas. Heartworms scare the HELL out of me so I do not miss a month. Even in winter when the misquitos aren't around.
