Born To Serve- The Damsel In- Distress |
| Barked: Sat Mar 9, '13 5:57pm PST | | | | | I had to wait over a year for one of the their pups.. I could only have a cream male. The other ones that went out as Service Dogs were also male and cream color. The cost is about $1500 or so for one of their pups.
That's one reason I went with them was because of their testing. Their dogs are sound and are used as hunting pudels. They've had several litters lately and most of them are already spoken for. If you get approved for one you have to put a deposit down to hold the pup. I was lucky to get to pick out mine. There were 2 male creams in the litter. When I saw them at 4 wks of age I took the larger of the two. His temperment test would be done before I picked him up. Ailbe has turned out to be a large pup -- At 17 months he's almost 69 lbs.
The only suggestion is to write to them asking about their pups and that you would like one to train as a service dog. I was lucky that they said yes, but you never know if they will allow another one to go out as a future service dog.

Service & Therapy Dogs > Let people pet your service dog
SHADOW,- Certified- Service Dog
 BORN TO SERVE |
| Barked: Mon Feb 4, '13 5:27am PST | | | | | I owner trained Shadow and not I'm doing the same with Ailbe (with professional help for both). In the beginning Shadow and now Ailbe were or are being trained for "NO PETTING". I do this for the 1s year and then when they're at the end of training or at the point where they are completely focused on me then I allow "petting"on command -- "Say Hi" Otherwise they completely ignore people around them until I give them the command. Ailbe is a social butterfly and loves people and at the moment he's not allowed to be petted. Shadow just ignore everyone and then loves the petting on my terms only.
As for leash -- They must be on a leash at all times unless your disability prevents it. Shadow goes off leash behind the cart when I'm shopping. I can't hold onto his harness handle and the shopping cart at the same time. Since Shadow is a mobility/balance dog and I need the support to walk and I can't hold onto two different things at the same time, then having him off leash is within the laws of the ADA. He's completely under voice command when I'm in the store. When I need to walk away from the cart then he's with me for I can use the harness. Ailbe is doing great in his training with cart duty, but isn't ready for not using a leash. When I lived in AZ our city had a rule that working dogs under voice command could be off leash to do their business or for training purposes. Since I have difficulty walking then Shadow was allowed off leash at my apt complex. When I was at my parents home he was allowed to roam the yard and never left it. Since moving here he was doing the same by staying in our unfenced yard. Well, he decided that roaming was going to be a new thing for his 9th year of life. He's now confined to the 10 ft lead in the front yard. My community is an HOA and they want the fencing in the back only, but due to the way the yard is and my disability its not an option. So, under the FHA they will attempt to approve of a proper fence for the front yard. Since I don't have the funds for a couple years I got permission to have the stake and 10 ft lead in the front yard. At the moment the roads around here can be slick plus its uneven and hilly which prevents me going on walks with both dogs. So the only way they can get any exercise is the 10 ft lead.
So, petting allowed after 1 year of intensive training of being totally focused then allowing petting with permission and on command. Leash laws apply for the ADA unless your disability warrants that you can't use it. Then you have city, state and county regulations that require dogs to be on leash. So, guest -- KEEP YOUR DOG ON LEASH!!!

| Barked: Mon Jan 21, '13 6:15am PST | | | | | I know some people who do have ADI PTSD and Psych Service Dogs... So, you can't say that the ADI doesn't approve of Psych dogs because some ADI programs do offer them.
The Dept of Veterans Affairs is working with them and the VA is ONLY doing a three study on the benefits of dogs working for Veterans with PSTD, psych disorders, etc.. The ADI didn't tell them that "We DON'T ALLOW THEM".
The ADI offers what the standard requirements of having a sound proof service dog in the field should be. You're going to find some wonderful and not so wonderful ADI teams. You could find a team going through a private trainer who doesn't know a darn thing about service dogs and tell you're dog is ready when they're not.
I went to an ADI program with my 1st and we passed the PAT with an ADI instructor. The only thing we refused was taking the final exam where they made it mandatory that all service dogs must pick up and retrieve. My dog could not, but could do other tasks to migate my disability. The Dept of Veterans Affairs took note of his training with this ADI program and grandfathered him in with the VA Service Dog Act. My Primary got on board with my service pup and its already on file that another dog is being secured for me. The VA told me to show me his training records and certification test for then can allow Ailbe in as my next VA Service Dog.

Service & Therapy Dogs > HUD housing and service dog question
AILBE,- Service Dog- In Tng
Born To Serve- The Damsel In- Distress |
| Barked: Thu Jan 17, '13 4:13am PST | | | | | Issac .. Being denied Reasonable Accommodation is where HUD comes on board. HUD has had many cases like mine where a new pup is coming in to replace the older one. I loved HUD when they told me "once a service dog, always a service dog". A service dog can retire from public work, but still can be a service dog at home till death.
My complex bluntly told me that I couldn't have a service dog in training because "only trained service dogs are allowed in apartments and the law says so". What they were confused with was FHA and ADA laws. So, HUD started the paperwork for my case. HUD works on a mediation process and many cases never go to court because your HUD representative will get the matter resolved. If the mediation process doesn't go well and HUD recommends court then they'll be your representative for the court proceedings.
So, all she has to do is get her pet classified as an ESA. The dog will remain as her ESA forever. Then she states that since her current ESA is not service dog trainable, then the request that a service dog in training will be coming in to her apartment to help with her disability. I had three medical deemed dogs and a cat in my complex that had a 2 pet policy.Since ESAs, service dogs and service dogs in training are not pets then they're allowed to "bend the apartments pet policies".
HUD is the 1st step --- Court proceedings are rare because really knows how to mediate you case.

Service & Therapy Dogs > HUD housing and service dog question
AILBE,- Service Dog- In Tng
Born To Serve- The Damsel In- Distress |
| Barked: Wed Dec 12, '12 4:44pm PST | | | | | You may have a pet, service dog, esa, etc.. in public housing. A Service Dog doesn't count toward the number of dogs allowed by that complex. You could first have your current pet moved up to an ESA (Emotional Support Animal) with proper written request from your medical team stating the dog will be the 1st phase of your medical needs. The 2nd phase will be getting your service dog that the doctor prescribed. Under the FHA (HUD overseas it) there is NO limit on the number of ESAs, Service Dogs, Service Dogs In Training for a person living in an apartment complex.
I had a Service Dog, ESA (cat) and a Service Dog In Training and was allowed those animals under the FHA laws.. My complex had a policy also on how many pets were allowed and with SDs, SDITs and ESAs they trump above and are allowed. They learned quickly that my animals don't count toward the pet policy.
Plus NO TRAINING IS REQUIRED!!!
I WON my case with HUD with my Service DogS and ESA in my apt complex... The FHA requires NO PROOF OF TRAINING...
http://www.hud.gov/offices/fheo/FINALRULE/Pet_Ownersh ip_Final_Rule.pdf
The only thing required by HUD is:
Reasonable Accomadation Letter requiring the need of a Service Animal (That can be done stating that your current "pet"has been upgraded to an ESA and will remain as one while a service dog can be obtained. In that letter you're explaining the need for both for medical purposes. Make sure you have it notorized and keep copies for your records.
Medical Letter just stating that you need a service animal and ESA without disclosing your medical condition
Make sure you SEND THE LETTER to the apartment complex landlord by Certified or Registered mail with a sign signature that they received it. Keep copies of everything.
Call HUD if they deny your request. HUD will give you a case number if they decide to go ahead and put in the formal complaint. The apt complex landlord and lawyers from the complexes headquarters will receive the complaint and HUD will put you into mediation mode till its resolved. If the landlord tries to give you the boot once you files a formal complaint they cannot make you move because they're in violation of federal law.
Go thru the Forums to read more on my case and all of the paperwork laws that HUD sent my way..

Born To Serve- The Damsel In- Distress |
| Barked: Tue Dec 4, '12 9:48pm PST | | | | | Sorry that I haven't been around for awhile. As you all know I had to become my dad's full time caregiver in June and stayed with him to the end of his life in August. I then had 6 weeks to find a home to buy in Virginia. In those 6 weeks I had to pack my folks home, clean it and get it ready to go on the market. Then I had to deal with a brother and sister-in-law from hell who kept stealing things till I finally told them to stay out till I move...
Due to all of the problems of taking care of my dad and dealing with mean family members, Ailbe's training went on hold till I could settle in Virginia. We did go out at least 4 nights a week to Walmart just to keep him interested in doing his job.
So, our move cross country with 2 dogs and a cat was interesting. Ailbe drove with me and my 5 yr old grandson. Shadow rode with my daughter. Ailbe was terrific at all of the rest stops, restaurants, and hotels. He got loads of compliments on his manners, etc.
Well, we've been here now since Oct 26 when we moved into my very first HOME. It's in a wooded HOA community and its AWESOME!! I have close to a 1/2 acres and the area is QUIET!! This is the first time in years where I can lay down and the next thing my alarm is going off. No street lights and no traffic.
Ailbe is doing great and we're getting back into a routine with his training. He's 100% goofy at times, but once you put his vest and halti on and its the "Service Dog Light Bulb"that's changed his manners. If I try to do anything for commands when he's not dressed he'll just stare at you like you're nuts. So, starting this week I've been keeping on his uniform while in the house. I can get great recalls and other commands done without a hiccup. I'm hoping to start taking him out locally, but Virginia requires SDITs to be with a trainer and wear the color of their school. The Dept of Veterans Affairs gave me a letter stating that he's a Veteran Dog in Training and I've been taking that with me. So far there hasn't been an issue. My son-in-law is a cop and says that the letter is a good one that will work with the State Law.
Ailbe has grown into one HUGE 14 month old pup. I had him at the Vet on Monday due to double yeast ear infections and they weighed him. He now weighs 64.8 lbs and is 27 1/2 tall. The Vet thinks he should top out at about 75 to 80 lbs by time he's done growing.
Oh, the AKC will start adding the CGC as a title after the dogs registered name. I'm in no hurry to get it yet and will take it when I know we won't have any issues. We got to catch up on 6 months of training that we lost due to the issues of my family. If he's 3 yrs old before we finish then so be it. I'm doing it slowly.
Ailbe's registered name is:
Sir Ailbe Knight of Harmony Mtn
I've updated his homepage photos.. Enjoy!!
Also, Ailbe has a nose issue -- he lost some pigmentation and the center of his nose is now pink. I will talk to his new Vet in two weeks .. It looks like he'll have to use sunscreen if it remains pink..
