I've fed them whole to my dogs. Less likely they'll have issues with the bones if you don't cut them up.

I had the same thought about more variety, but I've heard they're basically just small chickens, so I don't know how different the meat really is from regular chicken. The different size/shape might be fun for the dogs though.

Choosing the Right Dog > Bird Dog Suggestions (Trigger?)

I did remember reading on Dogster that some of the bird dogs could be pretty sensitive, which is indeed why I mentioned it. It's mostly things like punishing the dog for digging in the trash, even when it's long after the fact, and he repeatedly leaves the can where the dog can get into it. I'm trying to gently work on him with that.

I can run Poodles by him, but I can't see him getting on board with that idea. He seems to gravitate toward the sleeker dogs, and while we all know looks shouldn't be the only factor taken into consideration when getting a dog, I know it is going to play a big part for him. I had wondered about Labs. Every time I look at Quincy's pictures it makes me want one laugh out loud Hadn't considered Springers or Cockers, although it sounds like those may be a bit high on energy? I would of course help with exercise, but no guarantee I'll always be in the picture. (Hey, just being realistic!)

If the GSP is a solid choice, I probably won't try too hard to convince him to go with something else. Especially because I really like the look of the breeder you mentioned a while back, Tiller. Although convincing him that it is worth it to spend $1500 on a well bred dog may be a bit of a battle!

SO wants to get a dog he can use for bird hunting after moving to Texas later this year. He's decided he wants a GSP, but when I asked him why he'd chosen that breed, it was basically that he'd seen one and liked it. As a kid, he had an English Pointer his father bought as a bird dog, but it sounds like the dog became mostly just a pet. Besides that, I don't think he actually has a lot of experience bird hunting with a dog (he does have hunting experience though).

From what I've read of them, I don't think a GSP would be a bad choice, but I'm wondering what others think. He's not really the kind of dog owner most Dogsters are (ie, his life doesn't revolve around his dog), but his dog does live in the house, sleep in his room, and is otherwise a member of the family. He can be pretty lax with exercising his current dog and I've mentioned to him several times that if he got a GSP he'd need to be more dedicated on that front.

I'm thinking a good breed for him would be something easily trained, not too sensitive (I feel some of his corrections are unwarranted/overdone), and a dog with the drive for birds, but nothing too over the top- a beginner's bird dog. Suggestions?

Oh, I know, Talker. We didn't lose power, but that heat was killer. Crazy how bad it is already with the fires, too. Not looking forward to real summer confused

Yeah, definitely need at least a couple other proteins. I order all my whole prey from RodentPro (mice, rats, chicks, quail, rabbit, and guinea pig), but I know not everyone can bulk order online. Might be able to check with reptile people and see if there are any sources for more prey in your area.

Nice thing about kittens is they're generally much easier to switch to raw than most adult cats who can be extremely resistant to switching. Do introduce as many different things as you can at a young age to avoid pickiness, even if you end up doing half raw.

Definitely call all the shelters even remotely nearby. A lot of dogs in more crowded shelters don't get listed on Petfinder. Could also post on sites like Craigslist in case anyone has seen him.

Hope you find him soon hughughug

Behavior & Training > how much exercise is too much for a pup?

It's not just about whether your dog has the energy/endurance for the exercise, it's about growth plates, as Skip said. If you want to go for long walks, that's fine. Running around is okay if it's off lead on soft surfaces like grass. But the high impact, repetitive motion of running long distances on hard surfaces can cause damage, especially if you're running her that often. It's really better to wait until your pup is fully physically mature. What age that is will depend on breed and individual dog.

Great pictures, Bonzer and Loki! Both very cute and creative smile

I'm still trying to think of an idea thinking So hot outside right now, might have to look through pictures I've taken previously. 100+ F + black, double coated dog = not much fun.

Do you have access to any whole prey? That's what I used almost exclusively with my kitten because it takes all the uncertainty out of balancing.
