Choosing the Right Dog > Why do I know so many idiots?
Lenny

| Barked: Sat May 25, '13 4:11pm PST | | | | | Charlie, if I could make em' go away for ya I would wave a magical wand and do it. If anyone deserves a break from them, you'd definitely be one who has earned a break.
At least you do have your pups to cuddle to feel better. A Lenny hug always makes me feel better from idiot head aches.

Behavior & Training > Previously Abused Dog, Barking, and Cesar Milan-esque Training

| Barked: Wed May 15, '13 3:01pm PST | | | | | I don't know if I would attribute all of that to Cesar. Your friend was able to remain calm and give a good energy (which fans of Cesar or not, I think all dog owners can agree with) and used a noise to interrupt the dogs behavior. Victoria Stillwell uses her "AH-AH!" noise to interrupt a dog's behavior. It's a similar concept.
I use all kinds of weird noises to interrupt my dogs when they're barking or doing something they shouldn't be doing. Interrupt, and then redirect to something I do want them to do and then reward the good behavior.

Lenny doesn't mind Crash. But Crash LOVES Lenny. He'll pester Lenny to play with him even when Lenny is done, and he'll try to cuddle right up next to him or even lay his head across his back. Lenny every so often allows this, but sometimes he'll get up and move to his own spot.
I'd love to hear about other pairs where one dog is a little more...committed than the other lol

Behavior & Training > Try the Dog Personality Test
Lenny
Lenny -The- Wrecking Ball |
| Barked: Sat May 11, '13 8:30am PST | | | | | Lenny got one red flag for stranger directed fear, he's always been somewhat nervous about strangers approaching him and trying to touch him. However, at a safe distance he doesn't display any signs of anxiety or fear. But I was expecting that flag.
But he got gold stars in everything else, except the misc. group where he got some red flags for roaming (he's a hound) and food stealing (again he's a hound...) so those flags weren't surprising either. lol
Very interesting assessment to do. He was in the 36 percentile for trainability which I found surprising. I thought that was pretty decent for as nuts as he makes me at times. Maybe there is hope after all lol

Behavior & Training > Flexi-lead rant
Lenny
Lenny -The- Wrecking Ball |
| Barked: Fri May 10, '13 4:55pm PST | | | | | If people can use them and keep their dog out of trouble then I am all for it. But I too have seen them used lazily, like owners just dawdle behind letting their dog go 16ft ahead of them or beside them into the road doing whatever they please. One of those arguments where it's not the tool itself that's the problem, but how it is being used.
I do have a 20ft line like Moose I use for my boys on the trails, easy enough to reel in when I need to but lets them go off and smell and bound around me lol. It can get tricky sometimes since Crash is still learning a lot of his obedience and such, but Lenny is decent enough that I can rely on him to be where I need him to be while I reel in Crash. But anywhere else, 6ft leashes and like another poster I usually have it shortened (especially in crowded areas or small spaces).

Rescue, Adoption & Happy Endings > Rescue groups too strict!
Lenny
Lenny -The- Wrecking Ball |
| Barked: Mon Apr 29, '13 10:17am PST | | | | | I agree some rescues are too strict. I'm so sad to hear of people who would obviously be good dog owners being turned down for things like children in the home or not having a fenced in yard (Even though I could see this being a requirement for a specific dog, but not as a requirement across the board).
But I guess I understand where they're coming from too... It would be hard for me to trust potential adopters as I am now, let alone if I was working in rescue and had to see close up the way some people treat their dogs like disposable property. Breaks my heart.
I agree if you can't find the right rescue group or have a situation most won't adopt to, then shelters are a great place to get a dog. Adopting our second dog there was easy. One simple page of questions, a driver's license and since he was already neutered we got to take him home that day. And I was surprised how nice the staff were. Helpful, patient, and friendly enough to people and very sweet on the dogs.

Choosing the Right Dog > So, convince me. Why should I not get a Border Collie ;)

I can't weigh in with personal experience, because borders are a breed I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. Just a little too neurotic, a little too smart, and way too much energy. My boy Crash needs about 2 hours of good exercise a day (maybe 1 if it's running) and that's a lot for me. And he's not that smart, so at least I don't have to work so hard to mentally drain him too.
But a lot of you crazy border people love those things about these dogs. You've done the research, you know how crazy this dog COULD be. You'll be fine I'm so excited for you bringing a border home and saving a life.

Behavior & Training > Adolescent frustration
Lenny
Lenny -The- Wrecking Ball |
| Barked: Sat Apr 27, '13 10:43am PST | | | | | We got Lenny at almost 6 months old. I immediately started him with clicker training because he was absolutely insane as a puppy. A wrecking ball more like it than a puppy. He loved clicker training and even though his nose distracted him, he managed to do what I asked. Eventually knew all the basic commands, and we finished our obedience class as quite a good team.
Then he hit a little over a year old...
He forgot everything. He became more destructive in the house, as far as counter surfing and getting into the trash and finding things like pencils to chew up. He started stealing from plates and totally blowing me off whenever I asked for anything. Literally making eye contact and then making the conscious decision to NOT do as he was asked. It's like a slap to the face and as if he was giving the middle finger at the same time. It's hard not to take that kind of stuff personally, and especially hard not to lose your patience. Especially with such a sensitive dog...
He's turning 2 in June, and I think I am slowly getting my dog back. He's a small breed, so I'm hoping this maturity thing will come quickly. It doesn't help my parents don't reinforce anything... so considering that and how he could be a lot worse I count my blessings.
I think Nosework helped some too, at least in my mind I wanted to believe it did
Moose will get through this phase, and you'll survive it. You've put a lot of work into your boy, it'll pay off soon enough.

Choosing the Right Dog > Need Help From Experienced GSD Owners!
Lenny
Lenny -The- Wrecking Ball |
| Barked: Fri Apr 26, '13 5:06pm PST | | | | | Jager, you say these people will care for these dogs and never give them up. How can you personally guarantee this? Will you or the dam's owner take in puppies that must be given back? If most of these prospective homes are with older individuals, what will happen if they become ill or too old to care for the dog (who will probably live anywhere from 10-13 years)? If a dog turns 3 or 4 and develops SSA or decides he's not a fan of other dogs... what will the owners do? Return them to you or the dam's owner? What will you do with the dog?
Knowing what I know about the thousands of animals that die every day, there is no way I could breed two dogs that would not better a breed (especially in ways of health and temperament).
It seems harsh and maybe extreme, but maybe you should watch this video. It shows one shelter's daily routine of animals being surrendered due to illness or no longer being able to keep them. And then it shows animals that ran out of time and how they have to die. All because of irresponsible owners who couldn't keep their commitments. There are enough dogs, including purebred GSDs, in shelters and rescues already. Please reconsider possibly adding to that number.
