reminds me of a cattle dog in the flecks but boxer-ish in the face, or perhaps dane. Be exciting to see!

The thing with hips is to keep those muscles as strong as possible. Agility did degrade her hips, no doubt. The bone rubbing on bone improperly will wear down the bone. But the FHO has been great and her muscles need the strength more than ever before to keep her mobile & happy. We are still competing & loving agility though!

Sheltie skin disease... hmm... I have never heard of it. And thank you for the info! Do you have any links on it? When I quickly googled it, I just came up with DM in Shelties but I will keep looking. The vet is still saying "Vitiligo", and that her eyes/nose will be the next to loose pigment. But they say there is no treatment because it is just a "cosmetic" issue. But I can't help but think if it is autoimmune related that it can't just be cosmetic. Thanks again for the help!

This isn't just a winter thing. It is cold here now. It began a year and a half ago when the lips & gums started loosing pigment. She has always been on Orijen or Acana, including the other 2 dogs in the house. Moxie is the only one with any pigment loss. It is pretty dramatic on her feet and gums. Extremely noticable because everything was black. Last year we had almost no winter at all, with only 4" of snowfall. I wouldnt think the cold could do it... perhaps Vitamin D because she doesnt spend hardly any time outside in the winter. I just wonder if I should be more concerned about this. She has regular white fur where scars have occured, but none elsewhere. We have a vet appointment next Tuesday and will have it checked out again then (different vet) and hopefully get some answers. Im just wondering there must be something going on with her and I'd like to fix it if at all possible. Could LYME cause something like this? She did have lyme, but was treated.

Hi there. I have some seriously BAD hips. My mom found out when I was 8 months old. I had an FHO on one hip and it has helped me a ton. My Mom gives me Adequan shots and that REALLY helps! I live for agility. It is the only thing that keeps my muscles strong. Now that Im older I only jump 8". It keeps my spirits up and me strong. When I dont keep up with agility I get very sore and stiff actually. When I was in recovery from my surgery I did underwater treadmill and saw a rehab specialist. She worked me with the electro stim and the cold laser really helped me heal by bringing new blood into the area. Anything that is sore is really helped by that increased blood flow. Loved that thing. Anyway... keeping active and the weight off are some of the best things for bad hips. The FHO was good for me, they wanted to do a total hip on both but I didnt have enough bone left to do so. The vet cant believe I walk much less compete in agility. Anyway, an FHO might not be right for everyone though. It was hard for mom to see me in so much pain at the time, but now it was well worth it. Stay active. Don't slow down or it will hurt more. Trust me!

Any other dogs out there experience this? It started on my mouth and gums. They were pretty and black when I was young until about 2 years old. Now I have loads of white spots on the pads of my feet. Total loss of pigment in cirlce-ish spots. My fur is still all black and tan like a pretty Beauceron should be... but my human is getting worried. The vets say Vitiligo, but give us no course of action for treatment or cause. frown When I look it up online I get the same thing. Mystery disease, possibly autoimmune related... common in Rotts. HMM... Anyone else know anything? Have a similar problem? Know any answers?! Thanks pups!dog

Food & Nutrition > Asparagus?

Is asparagus toxic to dogs? We don't feed our dog(s) asparagus, but there is a chance they could get a hold of some. It seems whenever Mihkoa gets some she gets VERY sick. (2-3 days of diarrhea) . Has anyone else had this issue before? We don't eat it super regularly(1-2x a month), but this has happened 3x now (getting a few small cooked pieces from the baby who loves to share). We are extra cautious now, but I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem or has more info. Thanks!

Dog Health > Popping hip joints , surgery or controlling pain for hip dysplasia??? Need advice or your experience

Oh I forgot to add... Mihkoa was 6 years old when she had this done. She is now 8 years old. She gets around well... shows minimal pain when doing serious hard core exercise... but then again she is strong and has never really showed any pain until she couldn't walk.

Mihkoa has the worst hips my vet had ever seen in 20 years of practice. We took her to UF Vet (the best in the area) and the vet wondered how this dog even walked in under her own power, when I explained this dog competes and places 1st in agility competitions. Seriously her xrays would make you cry. Keeping her muscles strong has been the only help for her. She went in to UF for a total hip replacement ($5,000) and when they got in there there wasn't enough bone to securely place the implant. Since the vet was already in there, they did an FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) instead (cut the ball off). This was a very very in depth surgery, and the recovery is WICKED. This very active, very strong dog who was in nearly constant pain and never showed it until she started carrying her leg at an agility trial after 4 straight runs was in excruciating pain. The FHO is very very rehab intensive. We did laser treatments, underwater treadmill, electro-stim, physical therapy. It was VERY hard on me emotionally wondering if I did the right thing or not for my dog. It was very hard on Mihkoa too. Getting her to put weight on her leg again... seeing her in pain. It was hard. We did a ton of really intensive rehab... so if you do go this route be ready to spend even more on rehab, or your dog wont want to walk again. Mihkoa is now able to do agility again. She in fact did her very first trial about 14 months after her surgery with the rehab. Only one run. Its hard. Its really hard... Would I do it again to her? No, I wouldnt do it to her other hip. I am thankful we did the one hip, even though it was so hard.

Good luck...

way to go
