Behavior & Training > Do shock collars hurt?

Of course they CAN hurt. If you buy a cheap crappy model with only a handful of levels, it can hurt. If you don't know what you're doing, it can hurt. It can hurt just as much as a halter, an easy walk, a flat collar, in the hands of an amateur. It's the fool, not the tool. And I personally have NEVER met an ecollar trainer who has EVER seen the need to use all the juice on a dogtra ... Not even to the halfway point ... Except testing it on themselves, of course.
Use one or don't. But back off on Nare.

Behavior & Training > Had to call AC again--follow up on the Boxer

Good on you for trying to help this poor dog.

Behavior & Training > Behavior after a bite

| Barked: Mon Jun 17, '13 7:36am PST | | | | | When I get my hands on a trouble maker (and invariably, it happens) I call animal control to pick up the offending dog. It puts it in the laps of the gods, seeming they are taken to the shelter, but at least I can take a walk in peace. | | | | |

Raw Food Diet > Chicken question....
Jackson Tan
Lad about town |
| Barked: Sun Jun 16, '13 3:00am PST | | | | | Some puppies do okay on wings, some don't ... Necks are very bony, a lot of calcium in a meal of these and easy to swallow down. I would use drumsticks and thighs, they are irregularly shaped and have lots of meat. The whole roasters can be really cheap too and then you can just hack off the chunks you want.
Mine chews up all chicken fine, even tiny little necks, but every dog is different.
ETA: I also see no problem with holding the food, especially with a pup? He should be getting used to your hands around his mouth, especially if he's going to be eating raw.

Behavior & Training > Oh Help...they say he bit someone...
Jackson Tan

| Barked: Sat Jun 15, '13 9:56pm PST | | | | | I personally think it probably was excited mouthing, because with a serious bite from a pit, no matter how good friends your neighbour is, there would be hospital bills to be paid. Same thing happened to me once, JT was in the front yard, old lady next door came out, he ran to say hi, she screamed and he amped up thinking it was a tremendous game ... Jumped on her ... Luckily I grabbed him before he could hurt her but I'm sure she saw that as an attack. I apologised profusely and bought her a box of chocolates and promised it would never happen again. So, I think you should just accept your neighbour saw it as a bite, apologise, get her something to say sorry, and assure her it will be the only time such a thing will ever happen. As long as you take lots of care in the future, I'm sure Callie will not be taken away. | | | | |

Better he learns right away that stuff will not fly, especially after the baby comes and you will more than likely be sleep deprived!!

Fence will have to be made stronger and if he's going to be outside when you're not home, he should be tied up. I guess you won't know if it was really a bite or just Callie's usual mouthing until you get all the details. Sorry this happened.

That's why these seriously human aggressive cases are often called 'gutshot' dogs within training circles ... no way that dogo meant business because she would be dead. Totally melodramatic response and the author should not be in that business.

Behavior & Training > Would a wolfdog at a dog park be a cause for concern?
Jackson Tan
Lad about town |
| Barked: Thu Jun 13, '13 12:16am PST | | | | | If the wolfdog's behaviour at the park is good, I would not worry about it. Some can be very stable and good out and about. I can certainly understand the woman getting upset about having her dog photographed too, that would annoy me no end.
If it bothered me, I'd stop using the park. I wouldn't bother digging for dirt or anything though. It's none of my business.
