Food & Nutrition > Changing from 2 meals a day to 1?

Huck is 133 lbs & overweight. Ringo just went to the vet and he's 90 lbs and according to the vet he's 10-15 lbs overweight. I cut down on their night time meal. Huck gets alittle over a cup of food and Ringo gets just about a cup. In the morning, they each get just about a cup of food but I put it in a plastic ice tea bottle. This way, they have to work to get the food out and they eat slower. I, just like you, also add left overs to their dinner. But I never give them bread, just whatever meat I have. So I suggest no more toast. My husband thinks I'm starving them but they sure don't look like they're starving. Huck looks like a beached whale and Ringo is catching up.

Behavior & Training > Hand signals for commands?
Hucky and- Ringo

My boys know both verbal and hand signals.

Sit..hand with palm down over head
down or lay dow,...Same as sit only 2 hands extend out
Stay.. Hand pointing down in front of their face, palm facing them.
Shake or give paw... Hand extened out with palm up
In the house, on the couch in the car or where ever I want them to go.... snap my finger and point to the place.
For recall they respond to me saying "Come" or my husband whistling. ( I can't whistle and I don't always have my whistle on me to blow which they also respond to.

There are things that I have no signals for. I just say, get your ball, get your bone, get your tug and they know that if I say get your toy that it means thier kong. they know what I'm talking about.

You just need to use the word over and over until they get it. Just like if you say " wanna go out" or " want a cookie" or " ride in the car" they know what you're saying and respond. Same thing with toys. keep saying bone or ball or whatever and they get to know what it is and then when you say go get your ball or whatever, they bring back the correct item.

Dog Health > Hurt dog putting on leash, feel terrible!

One thing I don't understand. If he had a collar on already and all you had to do was clip on the leash, how did you choke him?

My boys know many commands, very good recall and they will walk perfect next to me off leash, but put a leash on either one them and they'll pull your arm out of the socket.

Behavior & Training > Is Your Dog a Protection Dog?

Both of the boys are pretty good watch dogs. They alert me if someone is pulling into the driveway or just walking past the house. Ringo has more of a high pitch bark, but Hucks is deep and to the point. If I heard them barking, I don't think I would attempt to break in. But, I think as far as an intruder in house, Ringo would probably lick him to death, but I think Huck would take a chunk of his butt.

Senior Dogs > What age is considered a senior?

I would say it depends on the breed of dog. Large dogs have shorter life spans. So what might be middle aged for a smaller dog would be senior for a larger one.

Behavior & Training > Have you ever shouted at your dog?

Some of the things that Huck did in that past, well, let's say he got off easy with me yelling at him rather then killing him. Like the time I came home and he chewed a hugh hole in the house and pulled out the insulation, and chewed an electrical outlet right out of the wall. Not to mention that I still don't have a couch cause I'm afraid to buy another one and I don't know how many pairs of glasses I've gone through in the past 5yrs.Oh and my grandmothers silverware with wooden handles that was handed down to me that don't have wooden handles anymore. Anyway, if anyone says they don't or never did yell at their dog then all I can say is liar, liar, pants on fire. I have yelled at my own 2 legged kids, so what makes my 4 legged kids any more special. laugh out loud No matter what anyone says, my boys know when they did something wrong and if I yell at them, they know why. At night when they start getting wild from winter cabin fever and I yell at them and tell them enough, go lay down, they don't look at me with a dumb confused face, they go and lay down.

I also tookd old socks or worn out kitchen towels and tied them in knots. I use to tie them in knots first, then wet them, then freeze them. I never had a problem with them stealing good socks out of the laundry basket. But as far as slippers go, I think by giving them an old pair to chew, it's like giving them permission that chewing my shoes is acceptable.

Both boys have a destructive past. Huck @ 5yrs old now and Ringo@ 4yrs old, they have come along way. They still have a setback every now and then but nothing major. My husbands house slippers are worn out and he took them off 1 night and gave each dog 1 to chew. I picked them up and threw them out, telling him that it's not a good idea for them to be chewing on the slippers because should we leave a good pair laying around and they get hold of them, they would think it's ok to chew them too. I prefer they just chew their bones and play with their kongs and tennis balls. What do you all think?
