Behavior & Training > Why don't people like controlling their dogs...?

We've had people storm into our Schutzhund practices (done at public parks) and accuse us of brainwashing and mind controlling our dogs. We had someone who would wait for people to leave their cars (lay a track or to help set up) and would tease the dogs from outside the car or untie them / open their crate.

People don't like putting too much effort into anything.

Behavior & Training > Dog Reactive in Class, Instructor Not Helpful

In our puppy class all we were taught (in 8 weeks!) was Sit, Down, Leave it, Wait, Watch/Focus and LLW basics. But I already knew how to teach that stuff because of my other dog.

When grooming-training (whatever you'd call it lol) I have my dog laying down and do a slow motion over their back with my hand-- not even touching at first, and drop a treat between their front legs/paws before they have a chance to turn their head around. Then I touch their back for my hand and I always give the treat AFTER the motion. Some feed during the motion but that just made my dogs expect me to stuff their face. Slow strokes from head to bum, then lightly over the tail, over the sides and on the elbows. Then i add a brush.. Now the brush certainly matters to my guys, Nare loves the slicker but will get uneasy with a tooth brush or comb. So do what works with your guys.
I don't know if you're clicker training your guys, but mine can give me their paws on cue (I numbered them 1-4) which you would probably want to teach as well.
Honestly, the trainer should know to work at the dog's pace. I know many dogs who couldn't down until the 7th week of class. And if one method does not work, then use another! I shape most of our commands (wait for the dog to offer the behavior like sitting/laying down instead of luring) and it helps my two, luring confuses them because sometimes people are inconsistent (leaning different ways, using different hands, different speeds and tones).

I wouldn't know what to do regarding reporting them or whatnot. I usually finish the class and don't go back.

BTW dont worry about the place command or any of that stuff yet. Your puppy is a puppy, enjoy him and have fun. He has his whole life to learn all sorts of commands and he's only a puppy for so long. If either of you are stressed, go back to basics but most importantly have FUN and don't worry what other peoples dogs do.

I never liked the idea of 'free-for-all puppy play'. In Ark's class they said it was to get their energy out but it just stressed him out and made the other dogs hyper and they couldn't focus all class because they wanted to play some more. My pup would just lay under my chair and watch them, while I shoved hot dogs in his face, I would rather he be calm than barking or pulling towards other dogs.

My suggestion is to use the puppies playing as a training distraction. Stand away from the group and reward your pup for good behavior (looking away from the other dogs, looking at you, sitting, laying down). Your pup won't be able to play with every dog he sees, and currently is stressed / uncomfortable around dogs, so the best you can do is teach him to ignore them. Google 'Look At That' and 'Behavior Modification Training'. I honestly think all puppies / dogs should know to ignore other dogs before engaging in play, the play is his reward and he has to earn it with wonderful behavior.

Behavior & Training > I think I have a problem

At the park Nare is weird about puppies. He'll growl, raise his lip and run from them. The way they move, bounce and wiggle creeps him out.
But he does just fine with Arkane and some of my friend's puppies and puppies at class, I really think it depends on if the situation is controlled or not. At the park no one really watches their puppy until something happens, and they all expect every dog to tolerate their cute bundle of joy when it's annoying the crap out of all the other dogs.

I think it all comes down to how to manage the situation. If you let the puppy get in his face and pester him.. Of course he won't like her! Keep introductions short, sweet and controlled.. plus make sure if something DOES go wrong and you intend to keep the new pup, that you are ready to utilize crate / rotate or something similar.

Farles looked like such a happy puppy!
I always thought Ark's fur was short-- but I guess thats because i have Nare to compare him to, who is the king of fluff. But it is quite long.

I agree that he doesn't have a spitz type coat, his fur isn't thick at all, just long and wavy. It does remind me of a golden retriever, someone asked me if he was one today.

Heres a picture from yesterday of Ark, I think it makes him look very collie-ish and his ears look HUGE!

Rescue, Adoption & Happy Endings > Should I Get This Dog?

All of our cats got neutered for $5 each .. With 3 days worth of pain killers, but I'll be damned if I try to give a pill to a cat, I'd walk away needing them for myself. laugh out loud

OP.. while I think you might be getting yourself into a sticky situation.. I'd try to get the pup for free. There are plenty of reasons. You have to enroll the dog into classes, get him neutered, vetted, checked over by a behaviorist, blahblah. I got away not paying Arkane's adoption fee by pre-paying for a puppy class, agility class and his neuter and showing the receipts (of course I didn't pay for the stuff until after I worked out a deal-- but still). While I could have easily payed $300 for his adoption fee, the rescue was more than happy to see it going towards Ark's well being.

Honestly, a 1 1/2 year old dog with no training for $150.. You can get that for free on craigslist. I wouldn't give them a dime. If they care about that dog then they would adopt him out for no charge to a good home.

Behavior & Training > Difference between temperment and personality ?

Nare

Bunny I wouldn't say it means she has an easy going temperament..
If it continues (her getting mounted / roughed with) she can respond in a variety of ways. She could become fearful of larger dogs/puppies jumping on her or very forward and reactive. Thats why they say it isn't set until about 2 years old, because everything that is happening right now has its own effect later down the line. I would say shes just a puppy and is probably pretty oblivious to what is going on for awhile. Her temperament is how she responds to the situation as a whole, while personality is dependent on the scenario.

Temperament is very.. blunt. Where personality is indepth and variable.
An example would be introducing a new stimulus to the puppy and how each handles it. If you put a pile of puppies in a room with a fan blowing on them, some will try to run, some will completely ignore it, some will investigate.
So theres shy, neutral and confident.
An easygoing pup would be a dog of the neutral category, I think. They aren't shy nor, too forward.

Atleast.. thats what i think

I don't think its that the UKC is less structured..
But, more that they care about the dogs more than the money lol.
For example.. in UKC you can do a lot more with mixed breed dogs. They recognize more breeds and breed splits (Japanese Akita and American Akita are not grouped).

OMG I hear you on the shaving! When Nare has his blood taken they shave his WHOLE leg. He has these little chicken legs and it drives me nuts, plus the fur takes forever to grow back..
Hopefully they'll have some impulse control shaving him.
May Nix have a speedy recovery and these little bumps smooth out.

Nare got red flags for Energy (cause he doesn't bounce off the walls when we go for a walk I guess), begging (he'll beg if you'll give!) and others grooming him (fearful).

Darn it, Nare.
