Behavior & Training > How do pet owners who work full-time manage a new puppy?

I took a couple days off when I got Quin...picked him up on a Friday and took 2-3 days off after the weekend. I found it was very helpful.
I also used a pen...I read Ian Dunbar's "Before and After Getting your Puppy" and I set up a pen in the kitchen with his crate, water, and a towel (he shredded pee pads and stuff) and if I was going for over an hour or 2 I would leave him in his pen.
The doggie daycare will be very helpful
I survived without a dog walker, but I definitley considered it. My mother was very helpful and since I worked evenings I could leave him in his pen and my mom woudl come home within a couple hours and take him out.
Good luck! | | | | |

Yes, it can take several tries for the full effect to occur. Indie's drolling lessened and after a couple car rides he was ok. I did also learn that he likes his crate being able to see out a window or see a person. I also do not feed him within 2 hours of a car ride
I tried to get the Thundershirt for my sister's Dachshund that was having realyl bad seperation issues (both her and her bf have to be around or he whines) but she tried it for 3 days and gave up...I told her you need to wait it out, but she just gave up...it is a 100% money back guarantee

The reason I do Sentinel is cause my guys are MDR1 carriers (can't have Ivermectin or anything related to it) and I don't want to risk any reactions. When Quin was a puppy I gave Revolution and he had massive diarrrhea and vomiting...so I just don't risk him having a more dangerous MDR1 genetic reaction.
So far Sentinel has been good for my guys...

I was looking at the Mazda 5 mini van and I had looked at the Element, but since my partner has a pick up truck, we went with a smaller car since we already have the truck
PS
I have heard that the Hyundai Tucson and Santa Fe are becoming better vehicles My father had one when he lived in Chile and now he is back in Ontario, Canada and him and his girlfriend have them.
Good luck making a decision!

Behavior & Training > Thundershirt for stressfull situations?

| Barked: Fri Apr 26, '13 2:59pm PST | | | | | Well...I have used the Thundershirt on both Quin and Indie for car rides.
I was very skeptical about it and thought what is this piece of fabric gonna do? I even tried a tight shirt once and it did not have the same effect lol
So....Indie used to have bad car issues (shaking, whining, trembling, vomiting, drooling) and for an agiility and conformation dog it was a pain.. he would get all grooemd up for a conformation show and when he got to the trial he was soaked in drool After 3 rides in the car with it on he is prefectly fine. The drooling decreased ad then stopped over the 3 car rides.
Quin has general anxiety issues and in the car he paces, circles, wont lay down and pants...with the Thundershirt he is able to lay down and actualyl sleep!
Now like everything, for some animals it doesn't work. The company does have a guarantee so it is worth a try!

Indie has had some belly issues and I've tried anything from Nutro Natural Choice to GO to Fromms...nothing worked...after spending $1500 on him being in hospital for 2 days due to a gastro upset I had him on the not so nice Medical Vet Gastro Low Fat dry food for 3 weeks to recover...I just transitioned him to Natures Variety Limited Ingredeitn and he has been awesome!
Stools are solid and not liquidy...which is a pain for long haired breeds LOL

| Barked: Thu Apr 4, '13 9:40am PST | | | | | I like the Nutro! I have been feeding the small breed brand for several months now and both my dogs love it!
PLUS...my one dog who has sterile struvite and had to be on Medical Urinary S/O for a long period, plus have cranberry supplements daily can now eat Nutro and be perfectly fine!
I have been looking in to the grain free formula as my other dog keeps having gastroenteritis and recently was hospitalized for 2 days...so I want to find a diet that will hopefully be good for him and not be the Medical Gastro Low fat LOL
I like the food! | | | | |

| Barked: Tue Jan 15, '13 4:18pm PST | | | | | I wanted to see if she woudl cover the bill at all...thankfully I used to work at the clinic I brought him to so it was only $150, but I would liek some compensation...
I fostered a female large Sheltie who had a rough past and ended up bolting out the front door and attacking a lab and german shepherd who were out for a walk a block away...the owners originally thought their lab was fine, but then came back with a $300 emergency vet bill for a wound which the rescue group covered...
I just think it is common courtesy for someone who owns the dog to pay the bill...opinions?

| Barked: Tue Jan 15, '13 2:59pm PST | | | | | Last week Indie, Quin and I were at the park after I had to work a day shift. The boys were playing nicely with a Golden and a Poodle mix when 2 other dogs joined the group. Supposedly the owner warned the 2 other dog owners that her younger yellow lab like dog was a little iffy...I was not warned at any point.
Indie went up to the large fat black lab and sniffed fine...he then went over to the yellow to sniff and I watched as the yellow dog just spun around and grabbed his neck...throwing Indie to the ground...all I could hear was him screaming!
I moved closer and yelled "gett off" and the dog stopped and then the BIG black lab joined in...thankfully the owner FINALLY got her dogs off of Indie and I was able to call Indie over.
I did a once over with my hands and didnt find anything but noticed him not wanting me to touch his right ear...I calmed him down and re introduced them with Indie's back end first and then lady then left.
it wasn't until I noticed his head tilt to the right and shaking his ear that I was able to scruff him and noticed blood...the other dog owners said they would vouch for me that the ladies 2 dogs attacked mine and I left the park.
I noticed a bite wound on his ear...a hole straight through the base of his ear out the back of his lower ear...the vet clipped it and he got a convenia injection for antibiotics...
He has healed really well so i am very thankful for that
I have been trying to find the dog owner, but have yet to do so...anyone have any pointers? I have informed 2 dog owners plus the 2 that were at the park when it happened...I was debating posting a note in the park saying if you are the owner of 2 lab like breeds who were part of an incidnet on Wednesday January 9th can you please email me...
Woudl that be rude?
Ideas? | | | | |
