I agree, he looks like a BYB at best and has a lot of nerve talking about himself as a "good breeder" naughty

That is what our rural vet wanted too, but he was quite responsive to a request for Doxy. Would he consider doing the doxy per request?

Hey Toto, we are rural. I researched the best heartworm treatment and then requested the doxy and ivermectin. I'm glad I did, my vet was cooperative but said he usually doesn't give doxy (they only recently got a chip reader after the younger vet bought the practice. He is making changes so maybe they will get more modern in other areas)

Moral is to do your research, not every vet is on the cutting edge of treatment, especially not in the rural south

Choosing the Right Dog > Ever "misjudged" a breed?

I misjudged Chihuahuas . I took in Cocoa because he needed a home and I am a sucker for needy puppies. He is adorable but I thought, half chi/half min pin.
Min pin must be why he is such a neat dog. Then I rescued Bella from the street. What a neat little lady of a dog. I had no idea I would love small dogs so much.

Quincy,
100% agreement, Moses could be turned off but he had a lot of opportunities to hunt, retrieve and do hunting dog stuff. He would have been miserable as a couch potato. He was such a special dog that when he passed away, my dad never hunted again.

My dad now has a yellow lab, ridgeback cross that looks a little like Moses but doesn't have even a little of the drive. He calls him Moses Jr in memory of the original Moses.

I once had a black lab mix, she was a sweet fun dog, not like Moses at all. She would retrieve but would get tired of the game and steal the ball. big laugh (Moses would retrieve for hours and ask for more.)

We had a rescue that did the two dose treatment. About 3 months on ivermectin, he was in too bad of shape to be treated at first, 30 days of Doxycycline and then the treatment. He had pain meds for the first few days, but almost no reaction to the treatment. I think the ivermectin and Doxycycline made a huge difference. Keeping him quiet was the only challenge. Today he is heartworm negative big grin

Good Luck

Gunner, I'm not so sure you misjudged the dogs you met, I think there are different lines of labs.

My dad had a field trials line lab when I was a child. That dog was so focused on hunting and retrieving that he would spit a little bit of paper on you for something to retrieve if that was all he could find. I have a vivid memory the that guy running down the driveway with a small log in his mouth.

He was a very well bred dog, but surely not a good prospect for a pet to a non hunter. He was also different physically than the labs I see walking around with folks. He was taller with longer legs, a big lean dog. His name was Moses because he could part the water. (He would run and jump into water, hitting chest first with his legs curled up and cause a wake like a speed boat)

....Maybe I am guilty of misjudging the breed too, I think of dogs like Moses when I think of labs.

hughughughugcry I think you are doing the right thing. Please remember that most rescue dogs are fine and it could have happened with a well bred dog too. Either he was damaged or something was wrong, maybe in his head, from birth.

I almost never talk about this, but I had a rescue dog that I raised from a puppy. She was dog aggressive and one day bit my husband for walking past. I had her destroyed. I still feel sad, but it was the right thing to do. Currently I have 6 rescue dogs, some from puppies some as adults. 1 tends to be aggressive enough to bite but he will growl first and is related to fear. He would never just grab and bite for no reason.
hughughug
It is hard but you are doing the best you can, be at peace. hug

PS When I had dragon put down, my trainer (horse and dog trainer) told me the world was full of good dogs and good horses that desperately needed homes. She said I shouldn't risk myself or anyone else on a dog that would attack for no reason. Her advice was what decided me to put the dog down. :-(

It sounds like it might be time to request a referral to a special ist, visit an university, or at least get a second opinion from a different practice.

I hope you feel better soon.

Fritz

PS it is common for dogs in our pack to live to be 17 of 18, even big dogs. 10 is a spring chicken.
