I know scientists have done research and the reason people often overlook black dogs is because subconciously people fear them more. The darker an animal, the more fear (think about scary shadows, dark places, etc.). Even in movies (Lion King comes immediately to mind) the sinister characters have a darker hue to them.

There is a thread about Big Black Dog Syndrome on the adoptions thread where evidence and statistics suggest that black dogs spend much more time in shelters and rescues because of the way they are perceived by the public.I personally don't have any problems with any color dog and if it's the right match color shouldn't be a deal breaker. For me personally lab mixes and I don't care what color they are they just have far too much energy for me.Other than that they really are beautiful dogs.

Sigh... I've always wanted a black catahoula with glass eyes. My dream dog (literally - I've dreamt of him). Maybe someday I'll find my perfect puppy. They're pretty rare, though.

Junie, our black pup is the least smelly pup I've ever come across. She can go longer without getting a bath than our other dog, and still smell like a daisy!

I tend to agree it's psychological! If anything, as a general rule, I think WHITE dogs are smellier!! laugh out loud A lot of people have said it's about food and grooming, and I totally agree. Plus, I feel like the fur type has something to do with it. My white cocker is a smelly girl, despite my overbearing attention to her grooming - she goes outside and runs around for 5 minutes and comes back in smelling like a sweaty jazzercise-r. I don't get it! smile

That's a new one!

Dogs that are prone to yeast infections and yeast overgrowth issues will often smell more, but that has nothing to do with the color of the dog. Instead it's related to a weakened immune system that could be triggered by many different things including diet, the overuse of antibiotics, steroids and allergies.

Sunny,
I think that may be a sporting breed thing. I know from different people with allergies that their allergy specialists have recommended avoiding the sporting and hound groups due to the oils on their skin and the difference in dander being more likely to cause a reaction to dogs themselves. Before I get slammed on this, this is not speaking of the environmental allergy thing.A dog that travels places and carries things on it's coat that a person is allergic to is also going to cause an allergic reaction. That would be a grooming issue.
I have known several people with more than one dog who brought hound or sporting dogs into their homes who have developed issues with allergies and after the hound type was rehomed symptoms returned to normal.

Mika and Kai,
THANK YOU! That makes a lot of sense. It would also be a beneficial answer to the original thread question, as I think a lot of sporting and hunting dogs are disproportionately black or darker colors, therefore creating the impression that darker dogs smell worse.
You guys are great. So is Sunny's lavendar coat freshener spray. shh

We would hope that all our pawrents would think we're perfect. No matter what breed or mix,big or small, breeder, rescue, shelter pup.
Since our pawrents are Dogsters too,I'm sure they do. Having loving pawrents, even if you only have one,who do their best to give us everything, especially forever homes even with our faults is a feeling all pups should have.
