Do you need it? No. Will it make your life easier? Yup!
It gives you a safe easy place to plant your little one while you answer the door, have a shower, go pee, etc. It will also aid in house training.
From puppies point of view it gives him a place to play and snooze, somewhere to attack toys and just be a dog.
I haven't seen mine in years, it's in storage but I wouldn't part with it ever. Mine also can be opened up and used as a barrier. That alone makes it a good buy.
