 | | | | In late 2011, the Florida legislature introduced legislation HB 997 and SB 1233 that if passed would close a loophole in state law and overturn Miami-Dade County’s breed discriminatory ordinance banning ownership of American Pit Bull Terriers, AmStaffs, Staffordshire Terriers and any other dog that meets the County’s definition of a “pit bull” dog. So for these two bills have had bi-partisan support and little opposition in committee. However, Miami-Dade County has raised concerns about negative impacts on its "Home Rule" Charter. These concerns are misplaced as this ban affects residents and non-residents of Miami-Dade alike. It is my sincere hope that the breed discriminatory ordinance will be repealed this year. | | | | |
