	Well I had a golden (13 years) and have numerous close friends with goldens and I have to say that spaniels (clumber and sussex at least) are a whole level up in the velcro/neediness level. Sussex in particular are incredibly attached to their owners. None of my spaniels have been aloof, but some can be with strangers. But all of my spaniels have been very one person oriented. I.E. their world rises and sets on their chosen human. Sussex in particular tend to have issues with SA. And a note on Sussex - they might be too large for what you want. Adult Sussex tend to be in the forty to sixty pound range. One of my Sussex boys was only 40 lbs but he was the smallest Sussex I have ever seen (dog or bitch). They aren't tall, but they are heavy boned. Sussex surprising are a very healthy breed despite the small breed pool. They are very difficult to breed, but once they are a couple of months old they are hardy and have a good lifespan. I know when I went to insure my dogs the rate for Sussex is very low (while clumbers have the highest rate - they do tend to have more health issues). You might want to check insurance rates for Boykins or other breeds you are interested in - that will give you a good idea of what insurance experience is with vet bills for the different breeds. If you like Boykins, I would say definitely try to meet some in person. We have a lot end up in rescue in this area so that might be an option for you if you want to go that way (maybe try fostering one first?). But having watched and photographed field trials for both goldens and boykins I have to say Boykins are a lot more dog. They are like little bees whizzing around nonstop. Incredibly fun to watch, but you have to live with that.

	Somerwynd- Tell Tail, thank you for all you information so much. It sounds as if perhaps the English Cocker or the Boykin after all are for me. I'd enjoy a "busy" dog, actually, having a few that aren't and one cattle dog mix that is pretty high drive. And I like a dog who "needs" you -- it makes me feel loved. Unfortunately, I have little chance of fostering a Boykin here up north in Vermont. I found a lovely young adult male for adoption in Georgia, but I think he will be snapped up, no doubt. The Boykins I have met were in Florida, and were, to a dog, friendly little guys, and Boykins and English Cockers (I've only met 3) are a good size for me. I love Spaniel ears and those eyes. I like a very energetic dog -- I have ten acres of wood and field, with a stream, as well as access to a lovely park with a river. I socialize my dogs A LOT. That's very important to me, and I've had a lot of success with my timid Toller mix and my Cattle Dog mix, both of whom were older when I adopted them. But I have a lot of time to decide. I am getting a field Golden Retriever puppy in a year and a half or so, and I will need to spend time raising him before a spaniel. Before I get the GR pup, Rolo, the Toller mix, needs a bit more work on his confidence. He's grown by leaps and bounds however. I will probably look for a breeder return or rescue in my Spaniel, if I can find one in my Spaniel of choice. I have been very happy with my Toller mix rescue, who was tested on both aggressive and submissive dogs before I foster failed with him. Anymore info on the various Spaniels is still wanted on this thread, I enjoy it and hope others do to. I am still somewhat interested in Fieldies and the Welsh.

	OMG, I found a gorgeous young Boykin male in rescue, but I just can't add another dog to my pack right now. I seem to be unable to link to the page, but he is in Boykin Spaniel Rescue under the name "Charlie." I certainly hope he is rescued by a nice person.
