What is the best way to keep a dog calm during the firework displays?

I read the tips on the Dogster home page for Fireworks & Pets: Tips for a Low-Stress Holiday. Does any one have any other tips for my very anxious dog? People were shooting off fireworks last night and my usually calm dog was running around the house panting and freaking out. Also he can not be sedated with medication.

What I'm thinking of doing for my dog is (I'll be home) close up all the windows and close all doors that would allow outside noise to creep in and either play music kind of loud or have the t.v. volume up loud. That way I can scramble the sound of bottle rockets or whatever when they go off.
Other than that, I've got no idea how to keep a dog calm during the fireworks.

Baxter

I was just talking about this as my little boston is getting more scared of them since our neighbors like using the M80's which are equal to a dynamite stick.
I wondered if anyone made doggie ear plugs. It is funny thought but also a serious one when some dogs are so un nerved at the loud sounds, I am also at the M80, it makes my windows shake!!!!

Bubbles

I give both of my dogs their Kong toys (oddly-shaped red rubber toys; can be found at most pet stores and even grocery stores) filled with wet food. This is a special treat because they ONLY get wet food inside the Kongs and they go absolutely crazy for it. They get so excited trying to lick all of the food out of the Kongs that they don't even notice the fireworks. (Otherwise they would psychotically pace around the house while barking their heads off.) This also serves as a reward for good behavior.

I hope this helps! :)
