Garlic is toxic to dogs in anything but trace quantities, so no, garlic is not a good idea.

It sounds like you need to take her to the vet to make sure you know what you're dealing with.

Dry skin or allergies are much different conditions and treating them is different, too.

It's very possible she simply has fleas that you can't see and that she's itchy because of that. But, again, without seeing her in person, it's impossible to tell. I'd highly recommend you take her to a vet, who is qualified to diagnose her and treat her so she's not suffering or uncomfortable. Chances are, it's a simple fix once you know what's up with her.

Good luck!

K-10 Von Canein

Raw meat, flax seed oil, salmon oil, and a corn free diet without the toxic preservatives! If you are lucky enough to have a few ounces of lamb kidney fat, add that in too! I hate most vets, but in this case a vet visit could, or could not be a waste of good money. If you have a good vet, he or she can work out a good diet with you with no medication!

go to the vet to find out if it's allergy or dry skin. as was said b4, garlic is toxic except in trace amounts... if you're looking for a good flea product, try K-9 Advantix... if it doesn't work and u know Frontline doesn't work try to find a product called Davis Flea & Tick Spray... unfortunately u have to spray every 3 days or so, but it does work. I had a lab i had to use it on because the others didn't work. I've been told that dog foods that have meat as their first ingredient are best for dogs, so if it's an allergy to food or other food issue you may want to try a food like either Authority Dog Food or Rachael Ray's Nutrish (2 brands I know of with meat as the first ingredient). but see a vet b4 you do anything.

Another vote for the vet. It may not even be allergies.

My person once had a dog with severe hair loss and skin problems. It turned out to be an allergy to corn. Do go to your vet, but also review your dog’s diet.

A food with a named meat and meat meal in the 1st 5 ingredients, no corn, no unnamed meat sources, animal digest, or by products. Home cooked and raw both have been known to help with allergies.

You can also try an elimination diet but I would eliminate the corn and byproducts 1st since a lot of time that is the problem.

Good luck.
PS avoid garlic, it can be toxic to dogs.

Hurricane Jack

Ok so like everyone said..go to the vet find out what is causing the hair loss. Once you get that figured out a bath every few days in a Chlorhexidine shampoo, most groomers have it or you can get it from the vet. Will have her skin back to normal in no time plus add extra shine!

If your vet has ruled out a medical issue with your dog's hair loss, there are a couple of things you can try: an elimination diet where the dog eats nothing but white fish and sweet potatoes for 12 weeks. Then start adding different food back. When the itching returns, you identified the allergen. This elimination diet was suggested by Dr. Andrew Jones, DVM.

Another thing to try is acupressure (anyone can do this). Points are GB 20, SP 6, LI 4 and LU 7. Information on these points or other Chinese medicine treatments can be found in Four Paws, Five Directions by Cheryl Schwartz, DVM.

I didn't try the elimination diet. I did try the acupressure points and it relieved the intensity of the itching. I also added Flax seed to her food, and almost immediately the furballs from her tail stopped.
