Running regimen for out-of-shape doggy?

Andy the year-old acd/terrier is a hyper little girl who just loves to chew and run around the house, especially in the wee hours of the morning when us people are getting their sleep. This is always remedied by a good run and exercise from what I read, so that, along with the general satisfaction of running, is getting me off the couch (or the bicycle saddle) and out the door with the girl.

However, despite her getting nice leisurely walks in the past, she definitely has not been run with. I'm new to her life, so this is a new thing. As such, she's been only getting one really good run a week, two very lackluster runs, and by the end of the week, the "I'm just too pooped," 'run'. She's enthusiastic, but I think out of shape.

I don't want to push Andy too hard too fast. She's slim and lean, so its not a weight issue. We run a mix of grass (during the day we have access to a park) and sidewalk (looking to get her booties for this soon). Suggestions from other runners?

If the dog isnt used to walking or running any kind of distance, you need to check with the Vet to be sure the dog is in good health. As Andy is only a year old, that shouldnt be a big problem.

Take your time. Build the distance slowly so you dont strain the dog. Be sure to take some water with you!

At a year old you should be fine starting at 1.5 miles. After you can walk about 3 miles, you can start running about a mile, then build from there. Just keep a close eye on the dog and be sure to end the walk or run if he shows any sign of fatigue, pain or if he starts shutting down.
