My Shih Tzu has diarrhea for about 2 wks. Tested negative for giardia. What else could it be?

He's had diarrhea for about 2 weeks, Sat had a little bit of blood, but tested negative for giardia. Put him on rice/chicken diet which didn't help. What could be wrong with him? He already has an eye issue so have spent too much money on eye specialist. Should i be worried? Could it be food allergies?

Dieta

could be a viral infection or maybe some intestinal irritation.
I think you should worry if it is diarrhea this is a sign he has a fever or a problem.
Diarrhea can also dehydrate a dog very quickly and this is a long time to have it.
Chicken and rice diet is good unless he is super sensitive to the chicken, you can subsistute for a cheap white fish.
Or switch 50/50 to Orijen fish.

HOOKWORMS! Not all wormers, in fact MOST wormers don't kill these devils. Bring him to the vet and tell him the symptoms and that you suspect hookworms. It's pretty scary, I had a dog with hookworms and it was an all at once thing just like your dog. fine and healthy one day and runny blood specked stools the next. Three days of treatment (wormer) and she was her old self. Just get to the vet because hookworms are bloodsuckers and can anemia if ignored.

Hello I have a suggestion that will help your puppy feel less bad but not a answer here is my suggestion.
Pedialite (if that's how it spelled) it came in a powder that you make or a liquid it is used on babies that have diarrhea. It will keep him more hydrated and make him feel better

Sunshine may or may not be right about the hookworms, but if the chicken and rice didn't firm him up, likely he has some kind of parasites. Get back with the vet for more tests. Sometimes giardia and other things don't show up on the first test. If your vet won't retest, or finds nothing, try another vet.

Food allergies are not nearly as common as many think and don't happen suddenly. A lot of it is hype to sell expensive foods.
