Leo

My dog bit my boyfriend last night. My boyfriend was pretending to bite me and my dog reacted and bit him in the face.

He is a 6 year old chihuahua. He normally really likes my boyfriend. How do I convince him that my boyfriend isn't a threat? I have read some articles about not allowing the dogs to sit on the couch. Does that work? Please help! I don't want this to ruin my relationship.

Your dog was protecting you, nothing more. Maybe if your boyfriend makes friends with Leo. Walk him, feed him, brush....

The couch has nothing to do with it, your boyfriend was being threatening to you, in your dog's opinion and he protected you.

Good luck

Are you sure he was protecting you and not just joining in the fun? At least younger dogs love biting games. There is question after question here on how to stop it.

Reserving the higher, softer spots for the higher ranking pack members is one way of demonstrating you out rank him. The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.

"rewarding standard commands with a treat."
Spoken like someone who does not understand conditioning a dog through positive reinforcement!...I, for one, do not feel the need to make my dog my opponent but rather my partner & student.
Chances are your Chi just got caught up in the moment & was joining in on what he saw as fun...Maybe it's best to keep the rough housing to a minimum around him.
Good luck!

chi's are notorious for loosing their heads and biting people. It seems everyone knows someone or has had themselves a run in with one!
What they lack in size, they make up for in aggression.
My friend has one and whenever anyone rough-houses it attacks. It is a protective thing.
If your boyfriend is a good one you don't have to worry about it wrecking your relationship. Nip it in the bud, let the dog know on no uncertain terms that biting anyone isn't acceptable. It'll take time but it can be done with consistency and patience.
Good luck

It's not just Chis I had a Lhasa Apso that also bit my then boyfriend when he bent over quickly to give me a kiss He was standing, I was sitting and she saw it as a threatening move. I didn't blame the dog. It was her only bite and it was more of a warning nip.
It's just NOT a good idea to act in a way the dog sees as threatening to its owner, that's dumb. Leo was a good boy in my book as he acted to protect you from what was plainly a terrible threat in his eyes.If this is a new boyfriend, he and Leo need to work things out.Dogs can sense hostility.I have to wonder how this guy feels about Leo.I wonder, was he teasing him by pretending to bite you? Maybe he shouldn't tease the dog?Does your boyfriend pretend to bite your face if Leo is not around? Why would your boyfriend want to see if he could provoke a reaction from Leo?Is he jealous?my vote goes to Leo if if becomes a me or him thing. As I told my ex once when he said I loved my dog more...HE never bit me (literally or figuratively
