I would urge you to book a visit with the vet, because this isn't normal and it might signal an underlying problem.

I don't really think that vitamins are the answer, here, as much as 1) finding out what's up, if there is an underlying issue, 2) upgrading his food to a good high quality brand that doesn't contain a lot of filler or by products (a mix of kibble and canned is ideal) and 3) maintaining the healthy teeth with dental hygiene like you're attempting with the brushing.

Just in case others read this in the future, I'd want to make sure people know that giving human vitamins or human toothpaste to a dog is very dangerous as both are toxic to dogs.

Also, I personally would simply use my finger in a damp washcloth to massage the plaque away; the outer surface is all you need to get to improve tooth health.

It's really important you get to the bottom of the issue; tooth plaque can cause heart and artery problems just like in people.

I hope that helps you out some.

The first thing you should have purchased was a visit to the veterinarians!!! For all you know, this dog could have a serious gum infection and no amount of OTC vitamins and/or brushing is going to help that...he needs antibiotics at the very least. Infections of the teeth can quickly spread throughout the entire body and can be fatal, especially since they often end up in the lining of the heart! Get him to a veterinarian ASAP before it is too late to save his life!

SUNSHINE

and three years old is way to young to have serious dental problems. If you have been feeding him canned food or that semi-moist stuff (do they even sell that anymore?) he needs to have plenty of chew toys. DRY kibble (not wet or softened with water) is best.
Water on the side. A good thing for a little guy with strong jaws to chew on is the really big biscuits for large dogs.
I like the bones from round steak if you canget them, I never see that cut bone in in the store anymore tho. Those bones are HARD. I always cook my bones some, it gets rid of the icky stuff that can become a haven for bacteria. I roast them with some salt and garlic powder.

If his breath is fowl it is probably a serious gum problem. You should ask your vet to look at his mouth that's all my advice.
