How do I keep my pup from hating rain and maximally clean in bad weather?

This is the first (full) rain in san francisco/bay area and I (Sammy) HATE going outside and even worse with my raincoat on. My mom has tried positive reinforcement with treats and gentle nudging but she would love some advice on other people's rainy day dog successes. Thanks woof!

Poor Sammy. A dog's first rain can be scary. And if he's really a young pup, he shouldn't be exposed to rain as he can get a chill and that's not good for him. But provided he's kept fairly dry and warm and is dried off when he gets into the house and is in a warm place, he'll be fine. I'd carry him out of the house and place him in a drier part of the yard or the neighborhood to do his business and then bring him right back in. After a few times of this, try just walking the dog on the leash and he should eventually get the idea that rain isn't a puppy killing monster! Ha!

I know how you feel though, we are in Southern California and the rains have just hit down here. Miserable!

It's just water! Go out in it with your dog! Neither you, nor your dog will melt in water! You may not enjoy it, but you have a dry house to come into, I expect. If you don't have a dry house to come into, call a roofing contractor.I would venture to guess your dog will never like rain, but your dog will LOVE rain if you are in it with Sammy!

Do you have a tree you can take him out and be under. That way he may not get as wet and then will have to run back into the house on his own after he does his business.

Since this was his first rain, it may get better when the next rain comes or when it isn't raining as heavily.
I also live in the bay area and I was afraid Mikey wouldn't want to go out in the down pour this morning since it was the first of the season and it was heavy. No problem. He got super soaked though and when we got home he got a toweling off. I leave a towel at the front door so when we come in he gets toweled immediately. I find that with his fur being wet, it's kind of like a mini bath, except for the soap and his fur is always softer afterwards.
If going outside is his only place to go pee, then you're going to have to stick to your guns and be persistent.
He'll get used to it.

BOL, the next time it rains go out and play in the rain with Sammy. He is not going to learn it is okay to go out an get wet unless someone shows him how fun it can be.
